The story

Volkswagen launched Jozef Kabaň's Lupo in 1998 to fill the gap below the growing Polo. It offered a premium cabin; its 3L TDI version later achieved an official 2.99 L/100 km.123

    A shortened Polo 6N floorpan underpins a three-door hatch about 20 cm shorter than the Polo.124

    The 2000–2003 1.4 FSI combines 104 hp, a 3L-style automated gearbox and 4.9 L/100 km average consumption.128

    GTI gets six speeds

    A close-ratio six-speed replaces the original five-speed gearbox and becomes standard on the GTI.19

  7. 2004

    ABS becomes standard across the range

    All models gain ABS in April. The Lupo had earned four Euro NCAP stars in 2000; driver and passenger front airbags were already standard.310

  8. 2005

    Fox replaces the Lupo

    Production ends in June after 487,856 cars. Annual output never reaches the planned 120,000; the Fox takes over in Europe.124

  9. 2013
