The story

Made to put emotion into Audi design, the TT carried its 1995 Bauhaus concept into production with few changes. From 1998 to 2023, three generations paired coupes with two-seat roadsters.134

  1. 1995

    Frankfurt coupe, Tokyo roadster

Frankfurt gets the coupe study; Tokyo gets the roadster. Their Bauhaus geometry survives the move to production with few changes.5

  2. 1998

    TT coupe reaches production

The Golf IV-based coupe enters production; the roadster follows in 1999. Painted bodies ride overnight trains from Ingolstadt to Győr for final assembly.34

  3. 2000

Recall adds spoiler, suspension and ESP

Early coupes and roadsters get a rear spoiler, revised suspension and ESP after fatal high-speed accidents expose stability concerns.35

  4. 2003

    3.2 quattro brings six-speed DSG

A 3.2 L VR6 joins with 247 hp and standard quattro; the six-speed DSG follows in July, cutting the pause between shifts.3

  5. 2006

    Aluminum, steel and magnetic dampers

The second TT pairs aluminum-front, steel-rear Audi Space Frame construction with optional magnetic ride dampers.36

  6. 2008

    First diesel production sports car

The TT 2.0 TDI quattro becomes the first diesel production sports car, delivering 168 hp and 350 Nm through a six-speed manual.34

  7. 2014

    Virtual Cockpit replaces the dials

The third generation debuts Audi virtual cockpit; a manual 2.0 TFSI coupe weighs 1,230 kg, up to 50 kg less than before.4

  8. 2016

TT RS gets 394 hp and OLED lighting

    The third-generation TT RS arrives with a 394-hp 2.5 L turbo five and Audi's first OLED lighting.4

  9. 2023

Last TT: a Chronos Gray TTS

Production ends in November 2023 at 662,762 cars; the final TTS heads for Audi's historic collection in Ingolstadt.13

How to spot one

Look for

  • A round aluminum fuel flap with TT lettering links the generations.1
  • First generation: flush bumpers and bulging wheel arches that break into the hood line.2
  • Updated third generation: Singleframe grille flanked by large side air inlets.14
  • Second generation: TTS has four oval exhaust tips; TT RS has two large oval tips.6

Year by year

  1. 1999–2000

Originally spoilerless, the first generation gained a rear spoiler, ESP and revised suspension; early cars were retrofitted too.3

  2. 2006

The second generation grows longer and wider; its rear spoiler extends at speed and retracts again.3

  3. 2010

Second-generation facelift: lightly revised front and rear styling, plus reworked headlights.6

  4. 2014

The third generation uses sharper body lines; Virtual Cockpit replaces analog gauges and the separate MMI screen.118

  5. 2019

Restyled grille and bumpers; US-market cars retain the pre-update grille, so this front-end clue varies by market.1420
