The story

Launched in 2000 on P2 underpinnings to replace the S70, the S60 gave the S80's safety brief a smaller, sportier body. The 2018 third generation became Volvo's first US-built car and its first sold without diesel.234

    P2 sedan replaces the S70

    The original S60 launches on Volvo's P2 platform, replacing the S70 with a smaller, sportier take on the S80's design and safety brief.23

  2. 2004

    300-hp R and blind-spot cameras

    The 2004 S60 R pairs 300 hp with Haldex AWD, a six-speed manual, Brembo brakes and Four-C. Camera-based BLIS arrives on the wider S60 range.356

  3. 2010

    Second generation, automatic braking

    A new S60 arrives as Volvo passes from Ford to Geely, with standard City Safety and pedestrian detection that can apply the brakes.24

  4. 2013

    100 Polestars for Australia

    The first production S60 Polestar goes on trial in Australia, with a limited run of 100 cars before wider expansion.7

  5. 2015

    Drive-E fours meet eight speeds

    For 2015, T5 and T6 Drive-E gain 2.0-liter fours and eight-speed automatics, with 240 and 302 hp; the six-cylinder Polestar delivers 345 hp.89

  6. 2017

    WTCC driver and manufacturer titles

    Thed Björk secures the 2017 WTCC drivers' title in an S60; Volvo Polestar also takes the manufacturers' crown.10

  7. 2018

    First US-built Volvo, no diesel

    The SPA S60 launches in South Carolina as Volvo's first US-built car and first without diesel. The US T8 Polestar Engineered hybrid makes 415 hp.24

  8. 2022

    Recharge reaches 455 hp

    The Recharge plug-in hybrid gains a larger 14.9-kWh battery and 455 hp; the 2023 model reaches 60 mph in 4.1 seconds in testing.111

  9. 2024

    Ridgeville production ends in June

    Production in Ridgeville ends in June for the EX90; China continues building S60s for Chinese and select Asia-Pacific markets.211

Look for

  • First generation: sloping roof, swept-back rear pillars, a short tail and pronounced haunches.23
  • Second generation: rear pillars stretch to the taillights above a double-wave shoulder line.214
  • Third generation: Thor's Hammer LED headlights and a VOLVO wordmark at the rear.23

Year by year

  1. 2005 model year

    First generation gains revised headlights, grille and bumpers, new rear lights and body-colored side moldings.25

  2. 2008

    First generation gains fully body-colored bumper and door inserts, a larger front badge and more widely spaced VOLVO lettering.2

  3. 2014 model year

    Second generation gets a wider grille, reshaped headlights, horizontal LED running lights and integrated tailpipes.2
