The story

Giugiaro's front-drive Golf arrived in 1974 to replace the Beetle. Named for the Gulf Stream (Golfstrom), it reached its eighth generation with a design by Klaus Bischoff's team.1456

  1. 1974

    Wolfsburg starts the Beetle's successor

Production begins in March, followed by May showroom sales. A transverse front engine and front-wheel drive replace the Beetle's rear-engine formula.7

  2. 1975

    Secret Sport Golf wins approval

A team including press chief Anton Konrad turns its secret Sport Golf into approved project EA195 after Toni Schmücker's March green light.8

  3. 1976

    GTI: 5,000 planned, 461,690 built

Germany gets the GTI in June with fuel injection and about 108 hp. Demand eventually turns the planned 5,000-car run into 461,690 Mk1 GTIs.8

  4. 1988

10 million Golfs in 14 years

The family reaches 10 million in June. The Mk2 marks the milestone with Starblue paint, blue-tinted windows and aluminum wheels.79

  5. 2003

R32 brings DSG to production cars

    The Mk4 R32 combines a 3.2 L VR6 with four-wheel drive. German buyers gain the world's first production-car dual-clutch gearbox.1710

  6. 2012

    Mk7 switches to MQB

The seventh Golf adopts MQB. Depending on the engine, it weighs about 100 kg less than the Mk6 despite its larger body.1

  7. 2025

    GTI goes DSG only

The facelifted 2025 GTI retains 241 hp, goes seven-speed DSG only and records 0–60 mph in 5.6 seconds in instrumented testing.11

  8. 2026

7:44.523 over 20.832 km at Nürburgring

Benjamin Leuchter sets the front-drive production record in the GTI Edition 50, using its Performance package and Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slicks.12

How to spot one

Look for

  • The distinctive rear roof pillars are a design thread running through every Golf generation.6
  • Mk1: sharp corners, flat body panels and round headlights.4
  • Golf II: softer body lines and compact rear lights mounted high on the body.9
  • Mk7 GTI: a red grille stripe and twin exhaust exits.18
  • Mk7 R: four exhaust outlets and silver-finished mirror housings.18

Year by year

  1. December 1975: Mk1

The early hatch's dipped rear body line, nicknamed Swallowtail, became a straight horizontal line.4

  2. 1980: Mk1

Wider rear lamp clusters replaced the early narrow lamps; US versions also gained rectangular headlights.4

  3. August 1987: Mk2

Front-door quarterlight windows disappeared and the grille gained larger slats.3

  4. August 1989: Golf II

GL and GTI received the conspicuously larger bumpers in the major facelift.9

  5. 2017: Mk7.5

The facelift introduced full LED lighting and optional animated rear turn signals.118

  6. 2025: GTI

New front-door GTI badges accompany an illuminated front VW badge and a red strip extending from fender to fender.11

Don’t confuse it with

  • Golf R-Line (Mk7)

R-Line brings sporty styling and trapezoidal exhausts; the R has four exhaust outlets and silver-finished mirrors.18

  • Volkswagen Jetta GLI (Mk5)

The GLI shares the GTI's front-end appearance; look for its separate sedan trunk rather than the Golf's hatch.117

  • Volkswagen Golf Plus (Mk5)

Look for the taller roof: the Golf Plus stands 95 mm higher than the standard Golf.17
