The story

Built to replace the 104 alongside the 205, the 106 reworked Citroën AX underpinnings. Laurent Rossi shaped the exterior under Philippe Couvreur; Paul Bracq drew the cabin. Peugeot's design beat Pininfarina's proposal.345

  1. 1991

    September launch below the 205

The three-door 106 arrived as Peugeot's entry model, a modern alternative to the slightly larger 205.4

  2. 1992

Five doors and a 1.4 diesel

Five doors joined in August. The 1.4 TUD3 diesel offered about 49 hp, 83 Nm and a 145 km/h top speed.34

  3. 1993

    1.3 Rallye: 100 hp at 7,200 rpm

The 825 kg homologation special combined a TU2J2 engine, injection and a catalyst; comfort equipment was pared back.14

  4. 1994

    November brings the 1.5 diesel

    The 1.5 replaced the 1.4 diesel, delivering 95 Nm, 158 km/h and a 0–100 km/h time of 18.3 seconds.34

  5. 1995

    Electrique takes the battery route

Heuliez developed its electric powertrain: nickel-cadmium batteries, 15 hp nominal or 26 hp peak, 90 km/h and an official 100 km range.4

  6. 1996

    Stronger body, city-car mission

The facelift strengthened the shell and shifted the 106 toward city-car duty; the closely related Citroën Saxo also arrived that year.46

  7. 2003

    July shutdown after 2.8 million

July ended the 1991–2003 production run at about 2.8 million cars; the French factories were Mulhouse and Aulnay-sous-Bois.34

How to spot one

Look for

  • Compact three- or five-door hatchback.4
  • Phase 1 has a boxy silhouette and sharply creased body lines.3
  • Phase 2 has rounded lights, a new grille and slimmer bumpers.7
  • Phase 2 has a lion set into the hood and all-red rear light clusters.27
  • Quiksilver borrowed S16 bodywork, so sporty bumpers alone cannot confirm a GTi.24

Year by year

  1. 1992

    Five-door hatchbacks join the original three-door body.4

  2. 1995

The grille lion becomes smoother, while the dashboard switches to a lighter color.27

  3. 1996

Phase 2 brings rounded lights, a new grille and slimmer bumpers; rear lamps become all red.27

  4. 1998

Side indicator repeaters arrive; S16 loses its side rubbing strips and standard painted electric mirrors.7

  5. 2000

S16 instruments gain white faces, and the wider range adopts a digital odometer.7

Don’t confuse it with

  • Citroën Saxo

Nearly identical in size and shape; the facelifted 106 has a Peugeot lion set into the hood.24

  • Peugeot 205

The 106 is smaller; Phase 1 has a boxy silhouette, with sharper body creases than the 205.23

Against its rivals

  • 106 vs Citroën Saxo 1.4XR

    0–96.6 km/h lower is better
