The story

Made to replace the 207 in 2012, the first 208 was shaped under Pierre Authier. It introduced Peugeot's production i-Cockpit, putting the instruments above a smaller wheel, while shedding 110 kg on average and gaining rear room.123

  1. 2007

    Pierre Authier's design project begins

Work began in late 2007; an internal sketch contest followed in January 2008. The exterior theme chosen that September came from Sylvain Henry.3

  2. 2012

A smaller, lighter successor to the 207

The Geneva debut replaced the 207, cutting 7 cm and 110 kg on average to favor economy, safety and performance, while adding 5 cm of rear knee room.12

  3. 2013

    GTi: 197 hp and a six-speed manual

The GTi paired a 1.6-liter turbo four with a six-speed manual. Its tiny wheel could block half the instruments; 0–100 km/h took 6.8 seconds.24

  4. 2014

GTi 30th gains a Torsen differential

The 205 GTi tribute brought 205 hp, a Torsen limited-slip differential and a 10 mm lower chassis, tuned by Peugeot Sport.25

  5. 2015

    Facelift: PureTech 110, BlueHDi 75/100

The refresh brought a wider grille and new rear lights. PureTech 110 replaced the 1.4/1.6 VTi; BlueHDi 75 and 100 replaced the HDi diesels.1

  6. 2019

    CMP, electric power and a 3D i-Cockpit

    Generation 2 used CMP and introduced a 3D i-Cockpit. Its 134 hp e-208 had a 50 kWh battery and could charge to 80% in 30 minutes on a 100 kW charger.26

  7. 2020

European Car of the Year: 281 points

The Mk2 won with 281 points. Its platform was designed for an EV from the start, preserving the cabin and luggage space of combustion versions.78

  8. 2023

Hybrids and a stronger electric motor

The refresh added Hybrid 100/136 and a 154 hp E-208 with a 54 kWh battery; claimed e-208 range had grown from about 340 to 399 km.79

  9. 2025

GTi returns as an electric e-208

The e-208 GTi was revealed, bringing the GTi name to the second-generation 208's electric branch.2

How to spot one

Look for

  • First generation: a small floating grille carrying Peugeot lettering.3
  • First generation: boomerang-shaped rear lamps with three LED claws inside.3
  • Second generation: a glossy black insert stretches across the rear.6
  • Launch e-208: a multicolored lion badge distinguishes the electric version.6
  • Facelift second generation: Peugeot's shield emblem sits in the grille.9

Year by year

  1. 2015 (first generation)

The grille widens slightly, the bumper changes and the rear lights get a new signature; some versions gain black headlamp backgrounds.1

  2. 2018 (first generation)

Three-door production ends, including the three-door-only GTi; the five-door continues in Europe until 2019.1

  3. 2019 (second generation)

A gloss-black insert appears across the rear; GT Line shows broad wheel arches and a larger rear spoiler.26

  4. 2023 (second-gen facelift)

The grille gains a shield badge; front fangs become claws, and upper trims get a revised rear light signature.9

Don’t confuse it with

  • Peugeot 207

The first-generation 208 has a small floating grille and boomerang rear lamps; its body is 7 cm shorter than the 207.13

  • Peugeot 208 GT Line (first generation)

GT Line badges mark the grille, fenders and tailgate; the original GTi has a chrome trapezoidal twin exhaust outlet.13

  • Renaultsport Clio 200 Cup

The Clio has vented front fenders and exhaust tips on opposite sides; the 208 GTi by Peugeot Sport groups its round pair on the right.11
