The story

Launched in September 1998 to replace the 205, the 206 was Peugeot's first car designed with a digital mock-up. Murat Günak and Gérard Welter led its design team; Welter drew the exterior and Paul Bracq the dashboard.13

    A belated replacement for the 205

    Peugeot's plan to cover the 205's market with the smaller 106 and larger 306 had failed; September brought the 206.1

  2. 1999

    4,000 GTs stretch to 4 meters

    The Grand Tourisme stretched to 4 meters for WRC homologation: 4,000 road cars, each with a numbered door-pillar plaque.14

  3. 2000

    Paris debut for the folding-roof CC

    Based on the 20Coeur concept, the CC paired a powered folding roof with roof-trunk modules manufactured by Heuliez in Cerizay, France.1

  4. 2003

    RC/GTi 180 and six-airbag update

    The RC/GTi 180 added variable valve timing: 175 hp, 202 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 7.4 s. Fall brought six airbags across the range except the CC.15

  5. 2006

    Ryton builds its last 206

    British production ended on December 12 as Peugeot closed the Coventry-area Ryton factory.1

  6. 2007

    6 million: Peugeot's production record

    The 206 reached 5 million in May 2005 and 6 million by late April 2007, overtaking the 205 as Peugeot's most-produced model.3

    206+ extends the European run

    February brought the Mulhouse-built 206+: a restyled 206 with a new nose echoing the European 207.1

    French production comes to an end

    Poissy and Mulhouse production ended on December 18; the 206 had reached 8,358,217 sales by 2012, Peugeot's all-time model record.1

Look for

  • The 2003 facelift combines clear headlights with a honeycomb grille.3
  • The 206+ has bigger catlike headlights and a broad, open-mouthed grille.117

    On the GTi, 307-style column stalks, passenger-seat height adjustment and upgraded audio identify the mild cabin update.15

  2. April 2003

    Ribbed headlamp lenses give way to clear twin-bowl units; a honeycomb grille and revised rear lamps complete the facelift.3

    New side repeaters and chrome badges complement the changed rear lamps.1
