The story

An after-hours bid to blend road use with racing ambitions, the Miura put its V12 transversely behind the cockpit. Widely regarded as the first true supercar, the original P400 claimed the production-car speed crown.1245

  1. 1965

Night shift to the Turin show

Dallara, Stanzani and Bob Wallace developed a road car with racing ambitions after hours; its bare chassis drew orders at Turin.1

  2. 1966

    Geneva reveals the P400

The P400 debuted at Geneva in March with Bertone bodywork and a transverse V12 behind the cockpit, mounted sideways to keep the wheelbase short.26

  3. 1968

    Bertone's roofless Roadster

Bertone's one-off P400 Roadster appeared at Brussels. It had neither a roof panel nor side windows.17

  4. 1968

    P400 S: 365 hp and electric windows

A thicker 1 mm chassis preceded the S; revised rear suspension curbed squat, while electric windows added comfort.68

  5. 1970

Miura S clocks 5.5 seconds to 60 mph

Road & Track measured 5.5 seconds to 60 mph and 270 km/h in the S. Ventilated Girling discs joined its specification in April.69

  6. 1970

    Jota: Wallace's 440 hp experiment

Bob Wallace's Appendix J test car used dry-sump lubrication and up to 440 hp; it crashed and burned in April 1971.1

  7. 1971

P400 SV: wider rear, stronger chassis

With 380 hp and 400 Nm, the SV gained wider rear tires, a stronger chassis and revised suspension; its headlights lost their eyelashes.12

  8. 1971

SV separates engine and gearbox oil

An autumn option separated the engine and gearbox sumps. Split-sump SV buyers could also specify a ZF self-locking differential.10

  9. 1973

The last SV; Countach takes over

Miura production ended with the last SV in October 1973; the Countach followed into production in summer 1974.10

How to spot one

Look for

  • A long, low nose carries exposed, rounded retractable headlights.210
  • The rear edges of the doors sweep upward into stacked cooling grilles.6
  • Satin-black slatted panels form the coupe's rear screen.6
  • Hexagonal-pattern grille at the tail.6

Year by year

  1. 1968 (S)

The S adds chrome window frames, bare-metal headlight bezels and an S badge on the tail.19

  2. 1971 (SV)

Headlight eyelashes disappear, replaced by gloss-black surrounds.210

  3. 1971 (SV)

Rear fenders swell outward to cover wider rear wheels.210

  4. 1971 (SV)

Larger taillights gain clear backup lenses; separate red reflectors move down into the hex-pattern grille.210

Don’t confuse it with

  • Ford GT40

Similar profile and windshield shape; the Ford is narrower, with plainer pressed vents.5

Against its rivals

  • Murciélago LP670-4 SV
