The story

Created to marry Rover sedan comfort with Land Rover off-road ability, the Range Rover arrived in 1970 with coil springs, permanent four-wheel drive and four-wheel discs; its first cabin could be hosed clean.167

  1. 1951

Road Rover explores a new brief

Gordon Bashford explores a larger Land Rover with the Rover P4-based, two-wheel-drive Road Rover. The project is shelved in 1958.7

  2. 1970

    V8 power meets permanent 4WD

The two-door original launches on June 17 with an aluminum V8, permanent four-wheel drive and disc brakes at every wheel.6

  3. 1981

    Four doors, then an automatic

The Classic gains factory four doors and the In Vogue edition; a three-speed Chrysler automatic follows in 1982.16

  4. 1994

P38A arrives; the Classic carries on

    P38A arrives with 4.0/4.6 L Rover V8s or a 2.5 L BMW six-cylinder diesel. The Classic stays in production until 1996.156

  5. 2001

L322 swaps ladder frame for monocoque

Developed under BMW and launched under Ford after the 2000 sale, the third generation carries Wolfgang Reitzle's investment into production.68

  6. 2012

An aluminum body saves 420 kg

The L405's all-aluminum structure saves 420 kg. Its 2013 diesel hybrid pairs a V6 with an electric motor for 335 hp and 700 Nm.79

  7. 2017

    P400e: 51 km on electricity

P400e combines a 2.0 L four-cylinder and motor for 398 hp and 640 Nm. Its 13.1-kWh battery offers up to 51 km electric range; 32 A charging takes as little as 2h 45m.10

  8. 2021

Fifth generation makes room for seven

PHEVs follow with 434 or 503 hp, a 31.8-kWh battery and a launch estimate of up to 100 km on electricity.1112

  9. 2026

    Electric arrives with 118.5 kWh

The twin-motor Electric delivers 542 hp and 850 Nm, up to 599 km WLTP range, and 10–80% DC charging in about 22 minutes on a 350-kW charger.13

How to spot one

Look for

  • Recurring family cues: clamshell hood, floating roof and split tailgate.6
  • P38A: rectangular headlights replace the Classic's round lamps.35
  • Early L322: front fenders carry vents, while the nose uses multiple xenon lamps.814
  • L405: slim gills sit on the front doors and the taillights wrap around the corners.15
  • L460: rear lights look like black trim until they illuminate.712

Year by year

  1. 1981 (Classic)

Factory four-door bodies arrive alongside the original two-door shape.46

  2. 1986 / later Classic

The 1986 nose gains a horizontal-slat plastic grille; hinges gradually disappear and the fuel cap gains a flap.4

  3. 1992 / 1994 (Classic)

The LSE/County LWB gets a longer wheelbase in 1992; the 1994 Classic gains the padded 'soft dash' dashboard.4

  4. 2006–2007 (L322)

2006 revises the front lights and side vents; 2007 adds glass-finish C-pillars and moves the ignition beside the steering wheel.714

  5. 2010 (L322)

A new grille and LED-accented lamps freshen the exterior; digital instruments replace the analog dashboard dials.14

  6. 2018 (L405)

Four grille bars replace three, LED daytime lights change and a second center screen replaces the climate-control knobs.9

Don’t confuse it with

  • Range Rover Sport (first generation)

A rearward-angled, one-piece tailgate distinguishes the first Sport from the full-size Range Rover's split tailgate.7

  • Range Rover Velar

Look for the Velar's sloping roofline over its midsize crossover body.7

  • Range Rover Evoque

The compact hatchback sibling; three-door and Z-fold convertible body styles are extra clues.367
