How to spot one

Look for

  • Stepped roofline: a higher rear section is a Discovery family signature.12
  • Original Discovery: Alpine windows set into the roof.4
  • Original Discovery: a spare wheel rides on the side-opening rear cargo door.4
  • Boxy silhouettes mark the Discovery 3/LR3 and Discovery 4/LR4.36
  • Fifth-generation Discovery: offset rear plate; aftermarket kits can move it to the center.1623

Year by year

  1. 1994 update

Series I gained larger headlights and a second set of rear lights in the bumper.3

  2. 1998 / 1999 US

Series II stretched the rear overhang and gained a wider stance while keeping the original wheelbase.367

  3. 2004 / 2005 US

Discovery 3/LR3 moved the spare wheel from the rear door to underneath the back.46

  4. 2009 / 2010 US

Discovery 4/LR4 painted the LR3's exposed plastic trim and added a new front bumper, headlights and tail lights.310

  5. 2017

Streamlined body and one-piece tailgate; Gerry McGovern said the divisive offset plate was designed for a slimmer plate.61223

  6. November 2020 update

New LED light signatures, sweeping indicators and a Gloss Black panel between the rear lights identify the update.13

Don’t confuse it with

  • Honda Crossroad

Honda badging is the clue: this was a rebadged Discovery sold in Japan and New Zealand from 1993 to 1998.36

  • Land Rover Discovery Sport

The smaller Discovery Sport also came with five seats; the fifth-generation Discovery has seven.16

  • Range Rover Classic

The original Discovery has a raised rear roof and an external spare on a side-swinging door; Range Rover Classic has a split tailgate.324
