The story

Porsche's 1990s financial crisis sparked the Cayenne SUV gamble beyond the 911 and Boxster. Sports-car pace met off-road ability; for 2026, electric models joined continuing combustion and plug-in hybrids.23

How to spot one

Look for

  • First generation: headlamp and fender peaks sit higher than the hood.25
  • First generation: no grille between the headlights; large air intakes sit low in the bumper.25
  • Second generation: door-mounted mirrors, sloping rear glass and tail lamps extending into the tailgate.8
  • 2024 facelift: larger front intakes, restyled headlights and more prominent fenders.13
  • Electric SUV: slim headlights, frameless doors and illuminated Porsche lettering at the rear.3

Year by year

  1. 2008–2010 (957)

Compared with the 955, the 957 has reshaped headlights, bumper, hood and fenders; LED tail lamps distinguish the rear.18

  2. 2011 (92A)

The new generation moves the mirrors onto the doors and extends the tail lamps into the tailgate; its roof and rear glass slope more.8

  3. 2014 facelift

Four-point LED running lights, reshaped hood and fenders, new tail lamps; inside, a 918-style steering wheel with paddles.1526

  4. 2019 Coupé

New Coupé body adds a sharply sloping roof and a rear plate in the bumper; its adaptive rear spoiler extends at 90 km/h.9

  5. 2026 Electric SUV

Electric SUVs bring a low hood, slim headlights, frameless doors and illuminated rear Porsche lettering alongside continuing combustion models.3

Don’t confuse it with

  • Volkswagen Touareg

First-generation cars share doors and a windshield; the Cayenne has headlamp peaks above the hood and no grille between the headlights.25

  • Porsche Macan

Check the overall size: the Macan is Porsche's smaller SUV.8
