The story

Ford's centenary project revived the GT40 as a supercharged V8 road car; a trademark impasse shortened its name to GT. The 2017 successor used a carbon-fiber structure and twin-turbo V6, with buyers chosen by application.156

How to spot one

Look for

  • 2005–2006: doors take a section of the roof with them when opened.17
  • 2005–2006: broad haunches, circular rear lamps and a deeply vented tail.17
  • 2017–2022: butterfly doors and open flying-buttress tunnels in the rear fenders.7
  • 2017–2022: cutaway nose, hood vents, hollow round taillights and twin exhausts set high at the rear.7

Year by year

  1. 2005

Centennial White with blue decals was limited to this model year.18

  2. 2006

Slatted grilles replaced mesh; Tungsten Grey with Quick Silver stripes celebrated the 1966 Le Mans win.518

  3. 2017

The new generation introduced butterfly doors without roof cutouts and open flying-buttress airflow tunnels.7

  4. 2019

The Gulf Heritage Edition brought blue and orange paint, exposed-carbon A-pillars and orange brake calipers.5

  5. 2020

Akrapovič titanium exhaust became standard; Liquid Carbon added clear-coated, unpainted carbon body panels.5

Don’t confuse it with

  • Ford GT40

Look at the size: the 2005–2006 GT is wider and 100 mm taller than the GT40 that inspired its body.7
