Born in Brazil in 2003 as an affordable urban SUV, the EcoSport's second generation used India's sub-4-meter small-car rules to its advantage and helped popularize the class.1234

    BV226 starts in Brazil

    Ford Brazil develops and builds the first EcoSport at Camaçari, using the European Fiesta and Fusion platform.1

  2. 2012

    The second generation goes global

    The B515 concept appears at New Delhi's Auto Expo on January 4; Brazil's launch follows on July 14.15

  3. 2013

    India launches with three engines

    India gets 1.0 EcoBoost and 1.5 gasoline or diesel engines; the 1.5 gasoline alone offers a dual-clutch automatic.46

  4. 2014

    Europe opens with 500 launch cars

    The European launch includes a 500-car limited edition, with 120 right-hand-drive examples allocated to the UK and Panther Black paint.16

  5. 2018

    123-hp FWD or 166-hp AWD for America

    US models get six-speed automatics. Tests clock 0-60 mph in 10.7 seconds for the 1.0 FWD and 9.8 seconds for the 2.0 AWD.178

    Brazilian production ends

    Ford announces the closure of three Brazilian plants on January 11, ending local EcoSport production.1

  7. 2022

    India and Romania stop production

    Indian manufacture ends in mid-2022; Craiova stops at year-end, leaving Europe to sell accumulated stock through 2023.1

Look for

  • A rear-mounted spare is common; spare-free export cars and India's SE are exceptions.320
  • Second generation: the side-opening rear door hides its release in the right taillight.12

Year by year

  1. 2015 (overseas)

    Indian-built export models become available without the tailgate-mounted spare wheel.20

  2. 2019 (India)

    S downsizes to 16-inch gunmetal alloys. Titanium+ adds a sunroof and swaps its 8-inch SYNC 3 display for a 9-inch unit.19

  3. 2021 (India)

    SE brings the spare-free export rear door to India, with a puncture repair kit instead of a spare.20
