The story

Designed to mix sporty sedan manners with MPV space, the original 4.77-meter S-Max debuted at Geneva in 2006 as Ford's first production model with Kinetic Design elements. Both rear seat rows folded into the floor.34

    7-seat SAV concept points the way

    The SAV concept appeared at Geneva as a design-direction study; a lightly revised production version became the S-MAX a year later.5

  2. 2006

    Geneva debut, Genk production

    The S-Max arrived at Geneva as a sporty 7-seat MPV below the Galaxy. Genk, Belgium began building it on April 18.24

  3. 2006

    2007 Car of the Year: 235 points

    Voted winner on November 13, the S-Max scored 235 points, just 2 ahead of the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa; 57 of 58 jurors awarded it points.23

  4. 2010

    EcoBoost meets twin-clutch PowerShift

    The facelift swapped the 2.5-liter five-cylinder for a 200 hp 2.0-liter EcoBoost, paired exclusively with the twin-clutch PowerShift gearbox.67

  5. 2013

    S-MAX Concept checks the driver's heart

    The Frankfurt concept previewed the next generation with a driver's ECG seat and glucose monitoring designed to warn of a child's diabetic episode.8

    Valencia-built Mk2 brings AWD

    Mk2 kept familiar proportions, moved to Valencia and offered AWD, adaptive steering and the sign-reading Intelligent Speed Limiter.3910

  7. 2018

    EcoBlue and 8 forward gears

    September brought 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesels with 119, 148 or 187 hp, replacing Duratorq units, plus a new 8-speed automatic.11

  8. 2021

    1.1 kWh Hybrid joins the family

    Hybrid brought a 2.5-liter Atkinson engine, 1.1 kWh battery and power-split gearbox. Cargo: 285–2,200 liters. Towing: 1,500 kg (7 seats) or 1,700 kg (5 seats).12

  9. 2023

    MPV production ends in April

    Falling MPV sales and Ford's shift toward crossovers, SUVs and electrified vehicles ended S-Max production, with no direct replacement.3

How to spot one

Look for

  • First generation: a low roof gives it a sleeker silhouette than the taller Galaxy.1
  • First generation: imitation vents sit in the front fenders.1
  • First generation: angular headlights, two trapezoidal grilles and large wheel arches.3
  • Second generation: a wide grille, slimmer headlights and low-set fog lights.917
  • Second generation: a long side crease passes through the door-handle recesses.17

  1. 2010 facelift

    First generation: a more sculpted hood, bolder grille and reshaped front bumper; higher trims gain LED daytime running lights.6

    Chrome now outlines the side windows; new LED rear lights and a revised S-MAX badge update the tail.6

    The nose adopts a much wider grille and slimmer headlights; the side profile resembles an enlarged C-Max.3917

    ST-Line's new Slate-Grau pack brings a honeycomb grille, black fog-light surrounds and its own front and rear bumpers.14
