The story

Built to challenge the Renault 5 and Fiat 127, Project Bobcat became Ford Europe's first multinational front-wheel-drive car in 1976. Engineers in Cologne and Dunton were backed by new factories in Valencia and Bordeaux.13

  1. 1976

    Fiesta reaches France and Germany

Sales start in France and Germany in September; the UK follows in 1977. The first North American run covers model years 1978–1980.2

  2. 1983

Five speeds and CVH for the Mk2

A wider front structure accommodates five-speed gearboxes and CVH engines; this generation also gains the Fiesta's first diesel.24

  3. 1989

Five doors and the injected XR2i

Mk3 adds a five-door hatchback and the fuel-injected XR2i. It later lives on as the Fiesta Classic until 1997.25

  4. 2013

Turbo ST: 197 hp on high octane

North American 2014 ST: a 1.6-liter four with 20-second overboost. Full power needs high octane; testing on 93 octane returns 25 mpg.67

  5. 2016

    ST200: 212 hp on overboost

Europe's ST200 delivers 212 hp and 320 Nm on overboost, with a shorter 4.06:1 final drive in place of 3.82:1.68

  6. 2018

ST goes three-cylinder; US misses out

An all-new 1.5-liter EcoBoost triple keeps 197 hp, adds cylinder deactivation and offers a limited-slip differential. The new ST skips the US.910

  7. 2020

    48-volt assistance reaches the Fiesta

July brings 1.0-liter EcoBoost mild hybrids offering 124 or 153 hp, backed by a 48-volt battery and belt-driven starter/generator.911

How to spot one

Look for

  • Mk1: an angular three-door hatch; ordinary European trims have small rectangular headlights.115
  • Mk2: headlights wrap around the front corners beneath a more bulbous hood.4
  • 2008 design: swept-back headlights and a large inverted-trapezoid lower grille.20
  • 2008 hatchback: high-set rear-corner lamps above a dark gray lower diffuser.20
  • Active: roof rails, extra ground clearance and protective cladding along the body sides.16

Year by year

  1. Late 1981

First-generation bumpers grow to meet revised crash requirements.1

  2. 1983

The second generation introduces a revised nose with wraparound headlights.4

  3. 1993

Third-generation cars receive revised door mirrors and fresh wheel-cover designs.5

  4. 1999

The fourth-generation facelift adopts a Focus-style nose, new bumpers and different wheel designs.21

  5. 2013 Europe / 2014 US

A new trapezoidal grille marks the sixth-generation facelift.6

  6. 2022

A new front bumper and standard LED headlights identify the facelift; higher trims offer matrix LEDs.911
