How to spot one
Look for
- 1977 hatchback: drooping nose and a rounded tail, with three or five doors.67
- 1980 Familia hatch: angular wedge body; the Red XG added a standard power sunroof.3
- 1989–1994 Astina: pop-up headlights, a wedge nose and a fastback tail.814
- Later Lantis/323F: curved five-door body and frameless door glass.14
- 1998 S-wagon: sloping roof, forward-leaning rear pillars and an inverted-pentagon rear window.1
Year by year
- 1967
The 1.0-liter sedan and van versions use broader, rounded rectangular headlights.5
- 1992 (323 hatchback)
The hatchback received new taillight lenses.21
- 1993 (323 hatchback)
The hatchback adopted Mazda's new corporate logo.21
- 1994
The pop-up Astina gave way to the curvier Lantis/323F with frameless windows.814
- January 1997
The three-door C was revised and renamed P; the P continued when S and F were replaced in August 1998.22
- October 2000 (Japan)
A stronger five-point grille, larger Mazda emblem, new multi-reflector lamps, hood, front fenders and bumper sharpened the nose.13
Don’t confuse it with

323
Ford Laser / Ford Meteor Ford Laser / Ford Meteor
Familia rebadges in several export markets; check for Ford branding when the body looks familiar.5

323
Ford Escort / Mercury Tracer Ford Escort / Mercury Tracer
North American Familia rebadges from 1991; Ford or Mercury branding is the useful clue.5
