How to spot one

Look for

  • A compact four-door wedge with a high tail that tapers noticeably toward the rear.518
  • Chamfered shoulders on either side of the trunk lid give the rear its distinctive shape.18
  • Look for the backward-leaning traditional Mercedes grille.18
  • Early standard cars have a thin black side rubbing strip and black bumpers.18

Year by year

  1. 1985

Standard models gained 15-inch wheels and the extending panoramic windshield wiper.2

  2. 1987 U.S. models

Rectangular sealed-beam headlights with yellow fog lenses gave way to lights with clear fog-light covers.19

  3. 1988: 2.5-16

The 16-valve car kept its bodywork, gaining a new badge, a right mirror and Almandine Red and Astral Silver choices.157

  4. January 1991

Body-colored mirrors mark this update; all except the 190 D and 190 E 1.8 also gained a lower center console.7

  5. 1991: 190 E 2.0 / 2.3

The 2.0 and 2.3 gained twin tailpipes, matching the six-cylinder's exhaust layout.7

Don’t confuse it with

  • BMW M3 Sport Evolution

Count the doors: the winged Mercedes has four, while the BMW has two.20

  • Mercedes-Benz W 126

The 190 has a stronger wedge profile, a higher tail and a more visibly tapered rear.18
