The story

Launched in Paris in 1975 to replace the Dino 246, the 308 paired Leonardo Fioravanti's Pininfarina styling with Scaglietti bodywork. Over 12,000 were built before the 328 took over in 1985, making it Ferrari's best seller yet.16

  1. 1975

Paris gets the Dino 246 replacement

The October launch gives the 308 GTB Pininfarina styling and Ferrari's first production body made largely from fiberglass.16

  2. 1977

7.9 seconds to 60 mph in a GTB

    Car and Driver measures 67.1 m from 113 km/h to rest and estimates a 225 km/h maximum for the 308 GTB.7

  3. 1977

    The fiberglass GTB bows out

June marks the end of fiberglass GTB production; the steel body adds about 150 kg.16

  4. 1977

Frankfurt opens up the 308 GTS

The September debut adds a removable roof that stows behind the seats; the GTS has a reinforced chassis and wet-sump V8.16

  5. 1980

    Injection trims emissions and power

The Bosch K-Jetronic GTBi/GTSi arrives with revised cockpit controls; output falls to 211 hp in Europe and 202 hp in the US.68

  6. 1982

Second at the Tour de Corse

Jean-Claude Andruet and Biche take a Michelotto 308 GTB to Ferrari's only World Rally Championship podium.910

  7. 1982

Four valves per cylinder revive the V8

Four-valve heads arrive at the October Paris show. The QV recovers to 240 hp in Europe and 230 hp in US trim.611

  8. 1984

    Second in the imported-car slalom

Car and Driver's eight-car import test also puts the 308 first in combined cornering and acceleration.12

  9. 1985

The 328 takes over after 12,000-plus

Quattrovalvole production ends in August. The GTB/GTS family closes a 1975-1985 run as Ferrari's biggest seller yet.1211

How to spot one

Look for

  • Pop-up headlights pair with four round taillights.20
  • Scalloped intake scoops along both flanks and a curved rear window.1
  • Full-width satin-black bumpers match the black beltline trim.1
  • US cars have projecting bumpers, rectangular side markers and amber front lamps.6
  • Early cars have 14-inch, five-spoke star-pattern alloy wheels as standard.1

Year by year

  1. Late 1976–June 1977

Steel GTBs lost the upper A-pillar seams; European cars adopted reverse lights in the rear indicators instead of the bumper.1

  2. September 1977

The GTS added a removable black-vinyl roof and completely louvered rear-quarter windows.117

  3. January 1978

A reshaped rear apron and four exhaust outlets became standard.5

  4. 1980

Injection brought GTBi/GTSi tail badges and metric TRX wheels; the clock and oil-temperature gauge moved to the center console.68

  5. 1982: Quattrovalvole

The Quattrovalvole update added front-lid louvers, grille driving lamps and Ferrari-badged electric mirrors.6

  6. 1982–1985: Quattrovalvole

An optional black roof wing was standard in Japan; 16-inch Speedline wheels were offered and Boxer lower-body paint was dropped.611

Don’t confuse it with

  • Ferrari 328 GTB / GTS

The 328 has snug body-color bumpers and vents only on the front lid; the 308 also has vents behind its headlights and black bumpers.117

  • Ferrari 288 GTO

The 288 GTO has wider wheel arches, different side vents and a larger rear spoiler than the 308 GTB QV.6

  • Ferrari 308 GT4

The GT4 has sharply angular Bertone bodywork and a 2+2 layout; GTB/GTS models have two seats.621
