The story

Conceived after Daewoo's split with General Motors, the Lanos was its independent bid to replace the Nexia. Development began in autumn 1993, Giugiaro's proposal won, and 150 prototypes were built by the end of 1995.12

  1. 1997

Poland buys over 30,000 in year one

European production began as Poland embraced the Lanos: over 30,000 first-year sales, helped by keen prices, three-year warranties and free servicing.24

  2. 1998

Euro NCAP strikes through star three

The third star was struck through for excessive side-impact chest risk. EU 1998 cars had driver airbags; safety equipment differed across versions.25

  3. 1999

    Daewoo's US bid begins

The Lanos arrived in the US alongside the Nubira and Leganza; all three were sold there from 1999 through 2002.6

  4. 1999

    Series II revises the suspension

The Series II update revised the suspension and power steering while cutting noise, vibration and harshness.78

  5. 2000

    Poland's 221-car Lanos Sport

The T150 restyle brought the Polish Sport, launched at Poznań Motor Show as a styling package; only 221 were sold there.9

  6. 2004

    ZAZ starts full-scale T-150 production

On December 6, ZAZ began serial T-150 production after an October pilot batch; the new and modernized facilities were designed for 60,000 cars a year.10

  7. 2017

Lanos passenger cars stop at ZAZ

ZAZ stopped passenger-car assembly on November 29, ending the Lanos's Ukrainian passenger-car run.2

  8. 2020

    Egypt carries production into 2020

Egypt's 1998–2020 run extended the Lanos's global life, which included kit assembly and licensed production in several countries.2

How to spot one

Look for

  • Rounded bodywork, big headlights and a large chrome grille identify Daewoo-badged cars.419
  • Body choices are three- and five-door hatchbacks plus a four-door sedan.2

Year by year

  1. 1999–2000 (T100 to T150)

T150 updates revise the nose and give the sedan more upright taillights; South Korea launched Lanos II in April 2000.2

  2. Late 2000 (Egypt)

Lanos II gained a new front bumper and grille; the sedan's rear was redesigned, while Juliet received new rear lamps and a bumper.2

  3. 2001–2002

Rear fog and reversing lamps sit on opposite sides; left- and right-hand-drive versions use different lamp layouts.2

  4. Early 2002 (Series II)

New grille, taillights and bumpers mark the second Series II refresh; the late-1999 trim changes were subtler.7

  5. 2005–2008 (Poland)

Polish production changed to the FSO name but kept the original pre-facelift exterior through 2008.2

  6. 1998–2009 (Russia)

Russia used Doninvest Assol in 1998–2000, Chevrolet Lanos from November 2005 and ZAZ Chance from July 2009.2

Don’t confuse it with

  • Hyundai Excel

The shapes are close; check for the Lanos's large chrome grille and big headlights.819
