The story
The original Challenger arrived late to the pony-car fight for 1970, targeting Cougar and Firebird buyers. It offered more cabin space than the Barracuda and engines from the 225-cubic-inch Slant Six to the 426 Hemi.23

How to spot one
Look for
- 1970–74 E-body: long hood, short rear deck, sunken grille and pronounced rear fenders.9
- E-body cars: four headlights in most years.2
- Modern revival: slabby flanks and a long-hood, short-deck profile.79
- Modern coupe: its fixed B-pillar hides behind the side glass for a hardtop look.6
- 1978–83 Mitsubishi-built cars retain frameless hardtop side glass.911
Year by year
- 1970–1971
The full-width rear lamp splits in two for 1971; the grille gains two inlets, silver on standard cars and black on R/T.23
- 1972
The sad-mouth grille drops below the bumper, while four rectangular rear lamps replace the earlier layout.2
- 1973–1974
Protruding bumpers and large rubber guards arrive for 1973; 1974 brings larger rear guards.23
- 2011
Ram emblems disappear; R/T gains a revised lower-grille opening and SRT8 a larger chin spoiler.6
- 2015
Split grille and split taillights gain LED accents; a new gauge cluster adds a 7.0-inch central display.5
- 2019
Hellcats adopt a dual-snorkel hood; Scat Pack 392 gains the Widebody option with flared fenders.59
Don’t confuse it with
