The story

For 1998, Dodge placed its Dakota-based Durango between Explorer and Expedition, with V8 power and a third row. HEMI power arrived for 2004; the 2011 model brought a Grand Cherokee-based unibody and Detroit assembly.456

  1. 1998

Dakota roots, a third row and V8s

The Dakota-based debut brings V8 power and an optional third row to a size between Ford's Explorer and Expedition.47

  2. 1999

    Shelby supercharges the family SUV

The Shelby SP 360 puts a Kenne Bell blower on the 5.9 L Magnum V8 for 360 hp. Just 300 are built, with Viper blue paint and racing stripes.68

  3. 2004

Seven inches longer, now with a HEMI

The second generation grows 7 inches longer and gains a 335-hp 5.7 L HEMI V8. From 2006, that HEMI adds MDS to save fuel.6

  4. 2008

    Two-mode hybrid, then Newark shuts

The 2009 Hybrid borrows GM's two-mode system, but lasts only two months; Newark Assembly stops production on December 19, 2008.69

  5. 2011

    Unibody return, built in Detroit

    The Detroit-built third generation shares a Grand Cherokee-based unibody. Its 3.6 L Pentastar and 5.7 L HEMI make 290/360 hp through five-speed automatics.610

  6. 2018

    475 hp and an NHRA-certified 12.9

SRT adds the 392 HEMI, AWD, an eight-speed automatic, Bilstein adaptive dampers and Brembo brakes; its quarter-mile is NHRA-certified at 12.9 seconds.11

  7. 2021

710 hp; 0–60 mph tested in 3.6 seconds

The SRT Hellcat's supercharged 6.2 L V8 drives all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic; independent testing clocks a 12.0-second quarter-mile.1

  8. 2024

AlcHEMI opens the Durango's Last Call

The SRT 392 AlcHEMI launches the Last Call editions with a 1,000-unit limit, yellow Brembo brakes and yellow-accented stripes.12

  9. 2026

    R/T gets the 392; HEMIs reach 2027

The R/T gains the 475-hp 6.4 L 392 and a claimed 4.4-second 0–60 mph. For 2027, GT HEMI AWD and Hellcat Jailbreak stay on the menu at 360 and 710 hp.1314

How to spot one

Look for

  • 1998: Power Wagon-style hood, bull's-eye grille and curvy Coke-bottle flanks.21
  • 1998–2003: the roof rises behind the front seats, with a rack masking the step.6
  • 2004: huge cross-shaped grille, big-eyed headlights and sculpted rings around the wheel arches.4
  • 2018 SRT: wide body and a hood inlet flanked by heat extractors.11
  • 2021: slimmer headlights and a nose styled after the Charger.18

Year by year

  1. 2001

A new dashboard arrives; the 4WD selector moves from a console lever to a dash switch.6

  2. 2004

A massive crossbar grille and dramatic fenders replace the first model's smaller truck-like face.22

  3. 2007

Facelift reshapes the grille, hood, headlights, fenders and wheels.6

  4. 2018

    A driver-oriented electronic T-shifter becomes standard across the range.11

  5. 2027

Smokescreen light gray joins the HEMI lineup; Hellcat Jailbreak gains exclusive Petrol Blue leather seats.14

Don’t confuse it with

  • Dodge Dakota

The 1998–2003 Durango shares the Dakota's nose, but continues rearward as a five-door SUV.6

  • Chrysler Aspen

For 2007–2009, check the model name: Chrysler's Aspen is the luxury relative of the second-generation Durango.6

  • Ford Explorer

The 1998 Explorer stays boxy; the Durango has deeply curved Coke-bottle sides.21
