The story

Launched in 1998 to replace the Tico, the original Matiz turned the Lucciola concept into a five-door city car with five seats inside 3.5 meters.234

    The Tico replacement reaches world markets with a 796 cc three-cylinder and five-door bodywork.23

    Asaka starts building the Matiz

    Uzbek production begins in August; the 1.0 L Matiz Best and automatic versions follow in December 2004.37

  4. 2002

    GM takes over Daewoo

    General Motors buys Daewoo during its financial crisis. By year-end, European Matiz sales reach 500,000, including 157,000 in Italy.3

  5. 2005

    Chevrolet badge, M3X-based redesign

    Europe adopts Chevrolet branding as the M3X-based redesign enters production at Changwon, with Mike Simcoe involved in the M200's styling.389

  6. 2008

    Korea marks ten years with SX Orange

    Orange seats, door trim and gauges brighten the SX Orange. Worldwide sales have exceeded 2.3 million by the end of 2007.10

  7. 2010

    BRC finishes its 60,000-plus LPG run

    The last Eco Logic leaves Cherasco on January 19. Since June 2007, BRC has assembled more than 60,000 LPG Matiz cars.11

  8. 2018

    Uzbek production ends in July

    GM Uzbekistan ends Matiz production in July, closing the run that began at Asaka in August 2001.7

How to spot one

Look for

  • Early M100: circular headlights and a stubby nose with no upper grille.3
  • Original body: oval door mirrors and slightly raised wheel arches.3
  • 2005 redesign: round taillights and a concave rear window.3

Year by year

  1. 2000–2001 (M150)

    Longer headlights, round indicators, a lower hood and a redesigned front bumper distinguish the facelift.312

  2. 2000–2001 (M150 rear)

    A tailgate plate recess, inward-pointing corners on the rear lamps and a reshaped rear bumper identify the facelift.312

  3. 2005 (M200)

    Headlights merge round lamps with indicator extensions; round rear lights and a central instrument cluster identify the redesign.321

  4. 2007 (M250)

    The grille encloses the badge; lower bumper skirts, a plate-bearing air intake and fresh alloy-wheel designs update the nose.3

  5. 2008 (GM Daewoo)

    New 13-inch alloys arrived, with blue or orange cabin colors and chrome air-vent grilles.18

  6. 2008 (European top trims)

    Top Chevrolet trims gained chrome around the front intake, side moldings and rear lights.3
