The story

Toyota and PSA created Aygo for young European city drivers. Its name plays on 'i-go'; the second generation swapped soft curves for a manga-inspired X-shaped face.45

  1. 2005

    Geneva debut, four-star adult safety

The first Aygo debuted at Geneva. Three- and five-door launch cars had ABS and front airbags; Euro NCAP gave four stars for adult protection.16

  2. 2006

    Short-lived 53 hp diesel arrives

The 53 hp 1.4-liter diesel arrived early in 2006 and lasted roughly a year; the original 1.0-liter gasoline engine made 67 hp.17

  3. 2009

    New nose and 106 g/km CO2

A reshaped grille and bumper refreshed the original Aygo; Toyota Optimal Drive revisions cut the 1.0-liter VVT-i's CO2 to 106 g/km.2

  4. 2012

    Fire, Ice and sub-100 g/km CO2

Fire and Ice headed the revised range; Fire featured LED daytime running lights. Engine changes put manual cars below 100 g/km CO2.8

  5. 2014

    Second generation debuts at Geneva

    A revised 1.0-liter made 68 hp and 95 Nm. The manual returned 4.1 L/100 km and 95 g/km CO2; x-shift automated shifting was also offered.691011

  6. 2017

    x-claim: 350 with a Bordeaux Funroof

Just 350 x-claim editions were offered, pairing White Flash paint and Burgundy decals with a Bordeaux red electric canvas Funroof.12

  7. 2018

    Twin injectors and 71 hp

The 1.0-liter gained twin injectors and exhaust VVT, raising output to 71 hp. The Eco version claimed 3.8 L/100 km and 86 g/km CO2.413

  8. 2020

Five doors; standard Toyota Safety Sense

The range became five-door only, with Toyota Safety Sense standard. The JBL Edition added a five-speaker system and 160 mm subwoofer.14

  9. 2021

Production ends; Aygo X takes over

After two generations, Aygo production ended in 2021. The crossover-styled Aygo X replaced it.6

How to spot one

Look for

  • Mk1: a broad smiling grille and a curved, all-glass tailgate.5
  • Mk1: a raised hood section around the Toyota badge and triangular quarter windows.2
  • Mk2: an X-shaped nose ties the grilles, headlights and side-window graphic together.10
  • Mk2: rear lights sit inside a hexagonal tailgate.10

Year by year

  1. 2005 launch

Original Mk1 cars have red-tinted rear lamp clusters, before the first facelift's clearer lenses.16

  2. 2009 facelift

Reshaped grille and bumper, dark rear lamp covers with circular chrome details, and black B-pillars on five-doors.2

  3. 2012 facelift

The second facelift brings a wider front bumper, a large trapezoidal lower intake and fog lights integrated at the corners.68

  4. 2014 redesign

    Mk2 introduces the bold nose X, a pagoda-profile roof with a built-in spoiler and a hexagonal tailgate.410

  5. 2018 facelift

The X becomes sculpted; new headlights integrate running lights, rear lamps gain LED guides, wheels change and the cabin goes Quartz Grey/Piano Black.4

  6. 2020 range

Five-door bodies become universal, and Toyota Safety Sense becomes standard across the range.14

Don’t confuse it with

  • Citroën C1

Mk1: look for Toyota's badge, grinning grille and curved glass hatch. Mk2: the Aygo's contrasting front X is the giveaway.5611

  • Peugeot 107

The 107 has almond-shaped headlights and a large lower grille; the Mk1 Toyota has a distinctive hood bulge around its badge.2615

  • Peugeot 108

For Mk2, look for the Aygo's contrasting nose X and hexagonal tailgate with inset rear lights.1011
