The story

Named for aurum, Latin for gold, the Auris replaced Europe's Corolla hatchback across E150 and E180 generations. Australasia kept Corolla badges; North America used Scion iM and Corolla iM. The 2010 Hybrid brought hybrid mass production to Europe.1

How to spot one

Look for

  • First generation: tall body, stubby nose and extra quarter windows ahead of the front doors.12122
  • First generation: vertically stacked taillights wrap around the rear corners.121
  • Second generation: a low, stepped roofline and three side-window sections above a rising beltline.15
  • Early second generation: chrome headlight eyebrows above a large trapezoidal lower grille.5

Year by year

  1. 2010 (first-generation rear)

Look for chrome above the license plate, revised taillights and a rear bumper with projecting catamaran-style corners.15

  2. 2012–2013 (second generation)

The second generation drops 55 mm in height and replaces the bridged console with a more horizontal dashboard.561423

  3. 2013 (Touring Sports)

A Touring Sports wagon joins the hatchback range, with roof rails as standard.67

  4. 2015 (facelift)

Chrome wings meet sharper headlights; a full-width lower grille, deep fog-light pods and shark-fin antenna reshape the front and roof.8

  5. 2018 (Bi-tone)

Blue joins Bi-tone colors; Manhattan Grey can pair with a black roof, spoiler, mirrors, grille and shark-fin antenna.16

Don’t confuse it with

  • Yaris (second generation)

The first Auris looks like a bigger Yaris; its very short nose is paired with extra quarter windows ahead of the front doors.122

  • Corolla (E120) hatchback

The first Auris keeps a similar profile, but has a chunkier, Yaris-like nose.124
