The story

Launched in 1980 to replace the Super Goélette, Renault's large van has reached four generations. Master IV pairs diesel or electric power with a body refined in an aircraft wind tunnel.34

    Gandini gives the big van round handles

    Master I arrives in September to replace the Super Goélette, with its sliding-door mechanism outside the body to save load space.15

  2. 1998

    Master II takes the international title

    Launched in November 1997, Master II follows up with the 1998 International Van of the Year award.36

  3. 2010

    Master III: 2.3 liters, two drive layouts

    Master III brings a 2.3-liter four-cylinder diesel in three tunes, from 99 to 148 hp, plus front- and rear-wheel-drive choices.3

  4. 2014

    Master III adds Twin Turbo

    The refreshed 2.3-liter range adds two fixed-geometry turbos: one for low revs, one for high revs, with both able to work together.7

  5. 2018

    Master Z.E.: 33 kWh, 120 km WLTP

    Master Z.E. brings a 33-kWh battery and 76-hp motor, with 120 km of WLTP range and 225 Nm.3

  6. 2019

    Diesel range stretches to 180 hp

    New diesel engines span 130–180 hp and reach 400 Nm; every diesel now uses Twin-Turbo technology.8

  7. 2022

    Master Z.E. becomes E-Tech

    E-Tech's 52-kWh pack lifts claimed WLTP range to 204 km and adds 22-kW DC charging, up from the Z.E.'s 33 kWh.9

  8. 2024

    Master IV launches and takes IVOTY

    105–170 hp diesels, 40/87-kWh EVs and a nine-speed gearbox arrive; the new generation wins the 2025 van title unanimously.46

  9. 2026

    Europe's large-van sales leader

    Master leads Europe's large-van segment in both combustion and E-Tech electric forms at the start of 2026.10

How to spot one

Look for

  • Master I: round door handles, a sloping nose and a sliding side door that bulges outward.118
  • Master II: door handles and the sliding-door rail line up in a pressed channel along the side.1
  • Master III at launch: a giant checkerboard grille with large light clusters down each side.1
  • From 2019, Master III has an upright grille, a chrome bar above the bumper and C-shaped daytime lights.1
  • Master IV: a new Renault emblem, large C-shaped LED headlights and C-pattern rear lights.4

Year by year

  1. 2003

    Master II gains teardrop twin headlights and a central grille diamond; the gear lever moves onto the dashboard.1213

  2. 2007

    Renault-badged Master II receives another grille redesign.312

  3. 2014

    Master III's grille now surrounds the Renault diamond; this facelift skips the Opel/Vauxhall and Nissan versions.311

  4. 2019–2024

    Master III gains an upright grille, C-shaped daytime lights and a chrome bar above the bumper; the dashboard is redesigned.11119

  5. 2024–

    Master IV has a shorter hood, a windshield set farther forward, streamlined bumper air ducts and a narrower rear body.4
