The story

Created to replace the T1 in 1995, the Sprinter shifted its engine 290 mm forward to free up cab space. The first Mercedes-Benz van with a name instead of a code soon gave an entire vehicle class its name.12

    A name replaces the numbers

    The T1/TN replacement arrives with a name instead of a code, plus standard four-wheel disc brakes and ABS.1

  2. 2000

    CDI, Sprintshift and a standard airbag

    The first major update brings CDI diesels and six-speed automated Sprintshift; the driver airbag becomes standard.13

  3. 2001

    Freightliner first, Dodge next

    The Düsseldorf-built Sprinter reaches America in mid-2001 wearing Freightliner badges; Dodge joins in 2003.24

  4. 2002

    ESP joins the Sprinter

    Electronic Stability Program becomes available, adding stability control to the Sprinter's safety kit.1

  5. 2006

    Second generation, three roof heights

    The second generation offers three wheelbases, four body lengths and three roof heights; 2007 Dodge versions bring diesel and gasoline V6s.15

    Crosswind Assist and the diesel four

    The 2013 update brings Crosswind Assist; US 2014 models add a 161-hp 2.1 L diesel four paired with a seven-speed automatic.16

    MBUX and a $500 million plant upgrade

    The US redesign adds MBUX and a $500 million South Carolina plant upgrade; Europe's first eSprinter offers barely 161 km of range in favorable conditions.78

    Nine-speed diesels, 113-kWh eSprinter

    Diesel fours gain nine speeds and automatic AWD without low range; the new 113-kWh eSprinter claims a 42-minute 10–80% charge.910

  9. 2025

    30 years, five million sales in sight

    The Sprinter turns 30 with sales forecast to pass five million by year-end. The US eSprinter now offers 81- or 113-kWh batteries.18

How to spot one

Look for

  • T1N first generation: the hood slopes down, unlike the earlier T1's angular nose.3
  • 2000 update: two steps sit in the front bumper for reaching the windshield.3
  • 2014 facelift: the grille has three slats.2
  • Third generation: very slim horizontal headlights; LED versions add a signature eyebrow.119
  • Third generation: curved lower side panels contrast with the flat upper body.119

  1. 2000

    The first-generation nose grows longer, and the hood drops farther down around the star.3

  2. 2002 / 2003 model year

    Clear-lens headlights, a revised grille, red-and-white taillights and white side indicators refresh the first generation.3

  3. 2013 / 2014 US model year

    The second-generation nose gains more angular headlights and a new grille; the front bumper loses its smiling opening.26

  4. 2013 facelift

    The rear gets clearer badge lettering, positioned below the body crease.20
