  1. 1931

Front-wheel-drive plans go up in flames

Lardone's front-wheel-drive prototype caught fire during testing; Agnelli responded by banning front-wheel drive at Fiat.4

  2. 1934

    Zero A begins road testing

Antonio Fessia put Dante Giacosa in charge of the small-car project; the Zero A prototype began road tests that year.23

  3. 1936

June 15: the 500 makes its debut

The two-seat 500 had a 2,000 mm wheelbase and 50 kg luggage capacity. It used 6 L/100 km and reached 85 km/h; October added the Trasformabile.136

  4. 1938

    12 world records at Monza

Lello Cecchini set 12 world speed records in the 350–500 cc class with a Topolino Sport tuned by Giannini.7

  5. 1940

    Italy enters war; production continues

The 500 continued in limited wartime production; armies and fighting forces also requisitioned the Topolino.48

  6. 1948

500 B brings overhead valves and a woodie

An overhead-valve engine brought 16.5 hp; the Giardiniera wagon had wooden bodywork and room for four people plus luggage.91011

  7. 1949

500 C: new body and Fiat's first heater

The restyled 500 C added an aluminum cylinder head and introduced Fiat's first cabin-heating and windshield-demisting system.111

  8. 1952

    Belvedere trades wood for steel

The 500 C wagon became the Belvedere, replacing the wooden Giardiniera body with an all-steel shell.1011

  9. 1955

    Belvedere closes the Topolino era

The sedan stopped in 1954; the Belvedere followed in 1955, ending a run of about 520,000 cars begun in 1936.13

How to spot one

Look for

  • A narrow body with visibly separate fenders is the family's basic silhouette.10
  • A/B cars have mouse-ear headlights perched on the front fenders.19
  • C cars combine headlights blended into the front fenders with a horizontal grille.14

Year by year

  1. Early vs. later 500 A

Early cars use quarter-elliptic rear springs; later A cars gain longer springs and a chassis extended at the rear.11017

  2. 1948–1949

The 500 B looks almost identical to the A; its changed hood handle is the small exterior clue.12

  3. 1949

The 500 C gains integrated headlamps, a horizontal grille and a spare wheel concealed behind the rear license plate.1114

  4. 1952

The C wagon exchanges its wooden bodywork for all-steel construction and becomes the Belvedere.11

Don’t confuse it with

  • Simca 5

This French-built relative has larger headlights than the Topolino B.18

  • Simca 6

The French-built relative has a bulkier front end than the Topolino C.18
