The story

Born in 1978 as the Celica Supra, or Celica XX in Japan, it was a six-cylinder GT aimed at Datsun's Z-cars. Supra means 'above' or 'beyond'; in 1986, it became independent of Celica.123

    Celica stretches into a six-cylinder GT

    The Celica Supra arrives in April, called Celica XX in Japan. Its longer nose accommodates a six-cylinder engine for a challenge to Datsun's Z-cars.14

  2. 1986

    A70 cuts the Celica ties

    February brings the standalone A70 Supra, with double wishbones at every corner and forged-aluminum upper arms to reduce weight.1

  3. 1993

    A80 brings 2JZ power and six speeds

    The A80 arrives with naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE and twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE engines. Turbo models introduce Toyota's first six-speed manual.15

  4. 1997

    Seven years as the braking benchmark

    A Supra Turbo stops from 113 km/h in 45.4 meters during Car and Driver testing. Its benchmark lasts until the Porsche Carrera GT beats it in 2004.6

  5. 2002

    Emissions costs end the run

    Japan keeps the Supra alive after overseas sales end, but production stops in July 2002 as upcoming exhaust-emissions rules prove too costly.1

  6. 2023

    A six-speed answers the calls

    The 3.0 gains a six-speed manual for 2023; the four-cylinder stays automatic-only. The A91-MT special edition is limited to 500.7

  7. 2025

    A90 Final Edition: 300 worldwide

    A manual gearbox meets 441 hp, 571 Nm and 275 km/h in the A90 Final Edition, limited to 300 worldwide.2

  8. 2026

    MkV production ends in March

    The 2026 MkV Final Edition for Canada retains 382 hp; fifth-generation GR Supra production ends in March 2026.48

  • First generation: a stretched nose, T-bar grille motif and sculpted horizontal taillights.17
  • GR Supra: double-bubble roof, muscular rear fenders and headlights with six LED lenses.18

  1. January 1987

    Japan's A70 3.0-liter Turbo Limited gains the wide body and blistered fenders previously offered overseas.313

  2. 1993

    The redesign replaces retractable headlights with fixed lamps and introduces a new rear Supra script.5

  3. 2025 Lightweight EVO

    The European GR Supra gains a carbon ducktail, front wheel-arch flaps and taller front tire spats.2
