The story

Built to replace the Uno, the Punto spanned three generations from 1993 to 2018. Nearly nine million had sold worldwide by May 2013; generation three became Grande Punto in 2005, Punto Evo in 2009 and simply Punto in 2012.1

  1. 1993

    Giugiaro draws the Uno's successor

The Uno's replacement arrived with Giorgetto Giugiaro's body design and a Fiat Styling Centre cabin; it was announced in September 1993.13

  2. 1995

370–292: European Car of the Year

The original Punto took the European title with 370 points, ahead of the Volkswagen Polo's 292.1

  3. 1999

    Centenary Punto gets Dualdrive steering

Fiat's centenary Punto offered 1.2-liter 8V/16V engines with 59/79 hp, two-mode Dualdrive electric steering and a revived round badge.1

  4. 2003

    Facelift adds small MultiJet diesel

    The second generation's facelift added a 1.4-liter 16V, a 1.3 MultiJet and a MultiJet evolution of the 1.9 JTD diesel.14

  5. 2005

    Grande Punto crosses four meters

The 4,030 mm Grande Punto shared its platform with the Opel Corsa D; the second generation continued as the Punto Classic in Italy until 2010.15

  6. 2010

Evo Sporting: 133 hp, unsettled ride

The 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo offered 133 hp and claimed 50.4 mpg combined, but inconsistent damping made the Sporting bounce over rough surfaces.6

  7. 2012

    Punto name returns with TwinAir

The Evo suffix disappeared and the 875cc TwinAir gasoline engine joined the range during the March update.17

  8. 2017

    Retested: zero stars overall

Euro NCAP gave five adult-protection stars in 2005, before percentage scoring; its 2017 retest gave zero overall, partly for missing safety aids.78

  9. 2018

    Production ends after three generations

Production stopped in 2018, closing a Punto story that began in 1993 and ran through three generations.19

How to spot one

Look for

  • Mk1 hatchback: vertical rear lamps; the Cabrio instead uses horizontal clusters.1
  • Mk2: a more angular body than Mk1, with a round Fiat badge on the hood.14
  • Grande Punto: elongated headlights form its 'Maserati in miniature' face.2
  • European Punto Evo: L-shaped rear lights and headlights with built-in daytime running lights.5
  • Indian Evo: hood bulge, clear-lens LED taillights and chrome exhaust-look rear bumper inserts.16

Year by year

  1. 1995 / 1997 (GT)

1995: smoked headlights, painted side skirts, no red side stripe. 1997: darker cabin, GT seat logos and removable mirror caps.11

  2. 2003 (Mk2)

New headlights and grille; fog lights became separate units, and a round Fiat badge appeared on the tailgate.14

  3. 2007–2010 (Classic)

2007 brought a silver grille; 2008 added the red Fiat badge, and 2010 cars gained larger side mirrors.4

  4. 2009 (European Evo)

The Evo gained a revised nose, headlights with integrated daytime running lights and L-shaped rear clusters.5

  5. 2012 (Europe)

Front chrome trim and plastic inserts in both bumpers disappeared with the next facelift.5

  6. 2014 (India)

Evo gained a new grille, sweptback headlights and hood bulge; trims were Active, Dynamic, Emotion and diesel Sport.16

Don’t confuse it with

  • Zastava 10

Read the badges: this was a Serbian Mk2 Punto rebadge; from 2009 it again carried the Fiat Punto Classic name.14
