How to spot one
Look for
- First-generation Polo: a circular vent at the base of the rear roof pillar.6
- Mk2 squareback: a nearly vertical rear window gives the hatch an estate-like silhouette.2
- Early fourth-generation cars have four round headlights, echoing the smaller Lupo.46
- Mk5: L-shaped rear-light graphics.823
- 2021 facelift: an LED light bar runs from the headlights toward the central VW badge.17
Year by year
- 1979 (Mk1 facelift)
Plastic bumpers and a revised grille arrive; Derby sedans switch from round to square headlights.6
- 1990 (Mk2F)
Square headlights, bigger bumpers and larger, reshaped taillights identify the major facelift.26
- 1999–2001 (6N2)
Clear-lens headlights, a larger grille badge and revised taillights arrive; the rear plate moves into the bumper.15
- 2005 (9N3)
A crest-style grille reshapes the nose, while redesigned rear lamps gain a three-dimensional appearance.4
- 2014 (6C)
Subtly reworked bumpers distinguish the 6C facelift from the earlier 6R.8
- 2021 (Mk6 facelift)
An LED bar spans the nose. POLO lettering moves below the rear badge, and new taillights echo the Golf Mk8.17
Don’t confuse it with

Polo
Volkswagen Lupo Volkswagen Lupo
Early Polo IV cars echo the smaller Lupo's four-headlight face; the Polo has the bigger body.4
