The story

Built as a workhorse for postwar Europe, the original T1 used the Beetle's engine and gearbox. Its rear-engine layout left most of the interior for people or cargo.145

2024One bus family, three branches
  1. 1947

    Ben Pon sketches the van

Dutch Beetle importer Ben Pon drew the idea after seeing a factory parts hauler; Volkswagen revealed a hand-built T1 prototype in 1949.16

  2. 1950

    March 8: T1 production begins

    Wolfsburg began building the T1. Its 1.1 L grew to 1.2 L and 30 hp in 1953, then an optional 1.5 L with 42 hp in 1963.237

  3. 1954

UK debut, then the Hanover move

The Transporter's UK public debut came at Earl's Court in 1954; production moved from Wolfsburg to Hanover in 1956.1

  4. 1985

    T3: diesel, turbo and Syncro

    A 50 hp diesel had arrived in 1981; the T3 gained a 68 hp turbodiesel, 112 hp 2.1 L gasoline engine and Syncro four-wheel drive in 1985.8910

  5. 1990

    T4: front engine, front-wheel drive

The T4 moved the engine and driven wheels to the front after 40 years of rear-engine, rear-drive buses, freeing more space at the back.2

  6. 2009

T5: common rail and 7-speed DSG

For 2010, the T5 switched to 2.0 L engines; the BiTDI made 177 hp. Common rail and 7-speed DSG marked the facelift, a light-commercial dual-clutch first.111213

  7. 2019

    T6.1 adds electromechanical steering

Electromechanical steering unlocked more driver aids, while a new dashboard offered digital instruments. The base 2.0 L TDI now made 89 hp.1415

Multivan and California take the MQB route; Transporter/Caravelle share Ford roots, while the electric ID. Buzz forms the third branch.21316

How to spot one

Look for

  • T1: split windshield; the front panel forms a V between the round headlights.23
  • T3: sharply creased nose and boxy body, the shape enthusiasts call 'the wedge'.13
  • T4: a longer nose accommodates the front-mounted engine.1
  • T6.1 Caravelle: headlights carry small chrome name tags that continue onto the front fenders.18

Year by year

  1. 1955 / 1964

T1: the huge engine lid gave way to a small hatch, tailgate and vented brow in 1955; 1964 Sambas lost corner glass, going from 23 windows to 21.325

  2. 1971–1972

Bay: 1971 wheels changed from 5x205 to 5x112; 1972 brought the Type 4 engine, larger rear vents and big rectangular tail lamps.19

  3. 1973

Bay: front indicators moved from bumper height to beside the air grille, while blade bumpers gave way to larger, square Europa bumpers.19

  4. 1979–1983 / 1986

T3: air-cooled versions lack a lower grille unless factory A/C is fitted; water-cooled ones have it. Some 1986 models gained rectangular lights.9

  5. 1996–2003

T4 Caravelle and Multivan gained a longer nose for the VR6 in 1996; commercial versions kept the short nose through 2003.17

  6. 2019 (T6.1)

T6.1 brought slimmer headlights and a deeper grille; a redesigned dashboard offered optional digital instruments.1415
