The story

Dodge's D-series took the Ram name for 1981; Ram became a separate truck brand in 2010. The 2019 Laramie showed the formula's reach: coil-spring comfort while towing and hauling.37

How to spot one

Look for

  • 1981–1993 trucks have squared-off bodies, rectangular headlights and wraparound taillights.3
  • The 1994 redesign pairs a big-rig grille with bold, separate-looking front fenders.34
  • DT trucks carry RAM lettering and a redesigned ram's-head badge on the tailgate.12
  • DT wheels have six lugs, a change from every earlier Ram generation.12
  • On DS trucks, optional RamBox compartments are built into the cargo-bed sides.9

Year by year

  1. 1998

Quad Cab adds small rear clamshell doors; rounded black plastic side mirrors also arrive.3

  2. 2006

SRT-10's large chrome door and tailgate logos give way to smaller chrome-and-red badges.1

  3. 2013

DS gets a revised grille and front bumper, new wheels and optional projector headlights.9

  4. 2025

Rebel gains a new black, powder-coated off-road front bumper and LED fog lamps.15

  5. 2026

    Hemi trucks gain a fender-mounted Symbol of Protest badge: a ram's head powered by a V8 block.14

Don’t confuse it with

  • Ford F-150 (2025)

The F-150's front side windows have a visibility dip; Big Horn Rams have a chrome grille, bumpers and handles.1216

  • Ford F-150 SVT Raptor

On the 2021 TRX, running lights sit inside the hood scoop; twin matte-black exhaust tips measure 5 inches.5

  • Ram 2500

The 2025 Big Horn's broad chrome nose can look heavy-duty; look for six-lug wheels on the DT 1500.1216
