The story

BMW combined SUV ability with a coupe roof on X5 underpinnings to create the Sports Activity Coupe. The original X6 traded rear headroom and practicality for a shape that divided opinion.13

    Concept X6 debuts at Frankfurt

    BMW previews its Sports Activity Coupe idea with the Concept X6 at the Frankfurt Auto Show.1

  2. 2008

    E71 debuts Dynamic Performance Control

    On sale in April, the E71 splits torque between axles with xDrive and between rear wheels with DPC. US engines: 300-hp 3.0 L six or 400-hp 4.4 L V8.17

    X6 M brings BMW M's first turbo V8

    The X6 M introduces BMW M's first turbocharged engine: a 547-hp V8 with a six-speed auto. It shares M's xDrive first with the X5 M.18

    ActiveHybrid: V8 plus two electric motors

    December brings the US ActiveHybrid X6: a twin-turbo V8, two electric motors and 480 hp combined for the 2010 model.19

    The G06 reaches showrooms in November. BMW and Surrey NanoSystems also create a one-off X6 in Vantablack VBx2, a finish with just 1% reflectance.16

    X6 M Competition: 617 hp, eight speeds

    Spring brings the 600-hp X6 M and 617-hp Competition, both with eight-speed M Steptronic; Competition needs 3.7 seconds to reach 60 mph.11

    S68 V8 and 48V for the 2024 X6 M

    April production brings the 2024 X6 M Competition's S68 V8, 617 hp and 48V assist, with the electric motor housed in its eight-speed M Steptronic.12

Look for

  • High ground clearance beneath a sloping coupe roof.1
  • E71: a low rear window above a distinct tailgate lip.17
  • F16: vents sit just behind the front wheelarches.27

  1. 2012 facelift

    Wider chrome grille frame, revised bars, outboard fog lights, optional LED headlights and two horizontal LED bars in the rear lamps.21

  2. 2012 X6 M update

    The M gains blue brake calipers, standard Adaptive LED headlights and a Powerdome hood.21

  3. 2014 / 2015 model year

    Second-generation cars have narrower headlights, a flatter, wider kidney grille and vents behind the front wheelarches.127

  4. 2019 / 2020 model year

    The third generation brings a large, angular single-frame kidney grille, with illumination available for the first time.114

  5. 2023 / 2024 model year

    Slim arrow-signature headlights, standard M Sport bodywork, trapezoidal exhaust trims and the BMW Curved Display identify the refresh.118

  6. 2024 X6 M Competition

    The full M gains a black X-shaped grille/intake panel, slimmer arrow-signature headlights and a black front spoiler lip.12
