The story

Fiat's Type 187 replaced the Cinquecento using its engines and chassis. Luciano Bove managed its 1995-98 design; Giugiaro's rejected Lucciola alternative became the Daewoo Matiz.345

How to spot one

Look for

  • Rounded three-door hatchback with a softly sloping nose.35
  • Teardrop-shaped headlights.1
  • Rear side windows have a lower edge that kicks upward toward the back.1
  • Broad, slightly tilted rear glass and an upright tailgate.5

Year by year

  1. 1998–2000

Early cars have orange indicators and five chrome Fiat slashes on the nose.5

  2. October 2000

Clear indicators, a wider bumper intake and a round blue Fiat badge refresh the nose; the instrument panel gains a digital clock.35

  3. 2002

In the renamed trim range, tailgate badges and stickers no longer identify the equipment level.5

  4. 2005

The name becomes 600, chrome whiskers dress the nose and Fiat lettering appears on the seats.35

  5. Late production

    Later 600s carry a red Fiat badge.3

Don’t confuse it with

  • Fiat Cinquecento

Look for the Seicento's rounder body, teardrop headlights and rear side windows whose lower edges rise toward the back.135
