How to spot one

Look for

  • On first-generation cars, a Cooper has one exhaust outlet; a Cooper S has twin central tips and a hood scoop.3
  • First-generation cars can wear contrasting roofs, hood stripes and black wheel-arch trim.3
  • First-generation rear side glass wraps around the rear pillars.23
  • New electric Coopers combine round headlights with an octagonal grille.10
  • New electric Coopers have flush door handles and smooth arches, with no side scuttles.10

Year by year

  1. July 2004 / 2005 model year

First-generation facelift moves reverse lamps from the bumper into the tail lamps and adds halo rings to xenon headlights.316

  2. 2007 model year

The second generation gains headlight-integrated indicators, larger tail lamps and rear pillars no longer covered in glass.3

  3. 2011

R56 facelift brings revised lights, new wheel designs and bumpers with working brake ducts.17

  4. 2019 model year

F56's first facelift adds the updated MINI logo and Union Jack tail-lamp graphics.8

  5. 2022 model year

F56's second facelift reshapes the front bumper and grille, with a cleaner rear and revised Cooper S and JCW valances.8

  6. 2024

Electric Coopers gain flush handles and lose side scuttles; the petrol Cooper S has a more upright windshield.1021

Don’t confuse it with

  • JCW GP Pack

GP Pack colors dress a standard JCW; a GP3 has carbon-fiber wheel-arch extensions with individual numbers.49

  • Cooper D

The Inspired by Goodwood wears Cooper S bumpers and a scoop-free Cooper D hood; its side indicator surrounds carry Goodwood lettering.20

  • Fiat 500C Abarth

With its roof down, the MINI has no B- or C-pillars or fixed side glass; look for the fully open sides.22
