The story

Launched in 1993 to replace the 190 (W201), the C-Class started as Mercedes' entry-level sedan. Its C36 AMG was the first joint Mercedes-Benz-AMG project; the C63 S E Performance later delivered 671 hp from a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid.^2,5,6

The first C-Class replaces the 190; September brings the C36 AMG, the first joint Mercedes-Benz-AMG project.^6,7

Common-rail diesel and the first V8
The C220 CDI gets common-rail injection co-developed with Bosch; autumn brings the C43 AMG, the first V8 C-Class.^5,6
2000
W203 debuts; SportCoupé follows
The W203 arrives in March; a three-door SportCoupé is presented that October, and a wagon follows in 2001.^4,7
2002
4MATIC reaches the C-Class
The C240 and C320 gain 4MATIC versions alongside rear-wheel-drive models, bringing all-wheel drive to the family.^4,7
2007
W204 starts a 2.4-million-car run
The W204 debuts on January 18; worldwide output eventually tops 2.4 million. Its coupe joins in 2011.^7,8
2014
Aluminum helps W205 shed 100 kg
The W205's new body structure saves 100 kg; assembly spans Germany, South Africa, Brazil and the US. China becomes its largest sedan market in 2016.^7,9,10

W206: 48 volts and a China LWB sedan
Unveiled February 23, the W206 switches to electrified four-cylinder engines, adopts second-generation MBUX and adds a longer-wheelbase sedan for China.^7,10
2022
C300 e: 60 electric miles in testing
Its 25.4-kWh battery enables 60 electric miles in testing. UK charging takes two hours at 11 kW; hybrid hardware cuts trunk capacity from 455 to 315 liters.¹¹
2026
MB.OS facelift announced for 2027
Announced in August, the update adds MB.OS and 255 hp plus a 27-hp overboost; US arrivals are planned for the first half of 2027.¹²

Look for

W202: boxy body, short high trunk and tall taillights.^7,20
W203: scalloped headlights have irregular, guitar-body outlines.^7,14
W204: straighter lines and geometric headlights replace the previous rounded look.²²
W205 sedan: S-Class-like styling in the long sculpted hood, front fascia and rear shape.^9,23
W206 sedan: central grille star, hood power domes and taillights split across the trunk lid.^7,10

Darker taillight lenses, reshaped bumpers and body-color side skirts; the radio antenna moves into the rear glass.⁵
2004 / US model year 2005
W203 gains clear headlight lenses, revised grilles and wheels, plus more assertive bumpers and side skirts.⁴
2011 / model year 2012
W204 gains revised headlights and front fascia plus LED taillights.⁷
2018 / model year 2019
W205 sedans gain C-shaped LED taillight guides and standard LED headlights and daytime running lights.⁹
2021 (W206)
New-generation sedans have two-piece taillights extending onto the trunk lid, and no upright hood star.^7,10,24
2026 announcement / US 2027
Combustion-model facelift adds an illuminated grille and star-shaped running lights and taillights; US arrival is in the first half of 2027.¹²
