The story

The CDW27 Mondeo was Ford's $6 billion bid to unite regional models in a world car. Its first generation made a driver airbag standard and won European Car of the Year for 1994; European sales topped 4.5 million by 2013.123

    Mk I: CDW27 goes on sale

    Sales start on March 22 after a $6 billion program. Every version gets a driver airbag; European Car of the Year follows for 1994.14

  2. 1996

    Mk II: almost every panel changes

    October's facelift keeps only the doors and roof, plus the wagon's rear quarter panels, from the original body.2

  3. 2000

    Mk3 arrives; racers sweep the standings

    October brings the second generation. Prodrive's racers finish 1-2-3 in the British Touring Car Championship, led by Alain Menu.256

  4. 2007

    UK Mk4 brings Volvo's turbo five

    The third generation launches in the UK in February on the EUCD platform. Its 2.5-liter turbo five makes 217 hp.7

  5. 2010

    EcoBoost joins the Mk4 facelift

    September's update adds EcoBoost engines and LED daytime running lights. The revised 2.2-liter diesel reaches 197 hp.7

  6. 2014

    Europe's Mk5 adds a hybrid

    The fourth generation, Mk5 in the UK, reaches Europe in October. Hybrid production starts at Valencia in November.8

  7. 2019

    Hybrid wagon joins the range

    The facelift adds a hybrid wagon and an eight-speed automatic. The 187 hp 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel can also drive all four wheels.910

  8. 2022

    Europe stops; China starts again

    European production ends at Valencia in March as buyers favor SUVs. In January, a fifth-generation sedan launches in China.2

  9. 2025

    China's 2026 facelift breaks cover

    Unveiled in November, the China-market update adds an octagonal grille and SYNC+ software while keeping the 27-inch 4K screen.11

Look for

  • 1996 facelift: a new grille and larger wraparound lights distinguish the revised face.4
  • 2007 model: inverted-trapezoid lower grille and a side-window line that kicks up at the rear.15
  • 2014–2022 model: slim headlights and a central hood bulge.8
  • 2022 China model: a front light bar accompanies a grille whose elements move.11
  • 2022 China model: fastback rear profile with Mustang-inspired LED taillights.11
