The story

Toyota built the US-made Tundra to take on Detroit's full-size pickups, offering its first pickup V8. The 2022 redesign swapped the V8 and rear leaf springs for V6 power and coils.123

  1. 1999

    2000-model launch in Indiana

The Tundra debuts in May for the 2000 model year, assembled at Toyota's new Princeton, Indiana, plant.1

  2. 2000

245-hp V8, Truck of the Year

Motor Trend awards the Tundra its Truck of the Year title; the original range includes Toyota's first pickup V8, a 245-hp 4.7-liter.1

  3. 2005

    VVT-i brings the V8 to 282 hp

    A 4.0-liter V6 replaces the 3.4; the V6 gains a six-speed manual option, and a five-speed automatic replaces the four-speed.1

  4. 2007

    Larger second generation, 381-hp V8

The 5.7-liter V8 gets a six-speed automatic; tow ratings for that engine span 4,100–4,700 kg depending on body configuration.14

  5. 2008

    San Antonio takes over production

San Antonio becomes the sole production site as the Tundra takes Motor Trend's 2008 Truck of the Year award.1

  6. 2008

    504-hp TRD, 4.4 seconds to 60 mph

    A dealer-installed supercharger ($5,875) and dual exhaust ($1,065) lift the 5.7-liter V8 to 504 hp; the regular-cab 4x2 tests at 4.4 seconds to 60 mph.5

  7. 2014

Major refresh brings the 1794 Edition

The cab and doors carry over, but the grille, fenders, tailgate, taillights and cabin are redesigned; the 1794 Edition joins.14

  8. 2022

New frame, rear coils, 14-inch screen

The third generation brings a boxed steel-ladder frame, multi-link rear coil springs and an available 14-inch cabin touchscreen.6

  9. 2022

    i-FORCE MAX delivers 437 hp

A motor in the bell housing boosts the twin-turbo V6; the hybrid makes 437 hp and 790 Nm through a 10-speed automatic.6

How to spot one

Look for

  • First-gen Access Cab: rear-hinged back doors cannot open until the front doors do.48
  • From 2007, Double Cab has front-hinged rear doors; CrewMax pairs its crew cab with a short bed.1
  • 2023 Limited Hybrid CrewMax: rear cab glass rolls down.3
  • 2022 generation: huge open grille, sharp body creases and vertical taillights.16
  • First-gen TRD bed decals are clues; confirm the factory package from the VIN equipment record.17

Year by year

  1. 2003

First-gen facelift adds a new grille and resin bumpers; V8 Access Cab gains the flared-fender StepSide bed.8

  2. 2004

Double Cab arrives with four side doors, a power-down rear window and a longer wheelbase than the other first-gen cabs.8

  3. 2007

The larger second generation introduces CrewMax; Double Cab now has conventional front-hinged rear doors.14

  4. 2014

A raised hood, larger grille, reshaped fenders and tailgate spoiler identify the major second-generation refresh.1

  5. 2022

The third generation adopts chiseled bodywork, a giant open grille and upright taillights.316

  6. 2026 (Canada)

TRD Pro offers the new exclusive Wave Maker exterior color.12

Don’t confuse it with

  • Toyota T100

The T100 extended cab has 2 doors; a first-gen Tundra Access Cab has 4, including rear-hinged back doors.1818
