The story

Built to replace the Morris Eight with an affordable family car, Alec Issigonis' Minor combined unitary construction, rack-and-pinion steering and torsion-bar front suspension. Its Mosquito design was widened 4 inches before production.12

  1. 1947

The prototype grows 4 inches wider

Issigonis has the prototype cut lengthwise and widened 4 inches, increasing cabin space and improving roadholding before production.2

  2. 1948

    October 27: Earls Court debut

The new Minor launches in London with a 918cc engine and two choices: two-door sedan or open Tourer.2

  3. 1952

Series II borrows the A30's engine

BMC's Series II takes the A30's 803cc OHV engine: 30 hp and 5.286:1 gearing. A Goodwood publicity run covers 10,000 miles in 10 days without stopping.456

  4. 1953

    Traveller arrives with structural timber

The Traveller wagon joins the range with an 803cc engine and split windshield. Its timber forms part of the body structure.7

  5. 1960

    Britain's first million-car model

On December 22, the millionth Minor leaves Cowley. The 350-car Minor Million celebration wears lilac paint and white leather with black piping.8

  6. 1962

1098cc, 48 hp and bigger brakes

    The 1098cc Series V has 48 hp and a 24-second 0-60 mph time, plus a balk-ring gearbox, 4.22:1 axle and bigger drum brakes.569

  7. 1971

    April ends British Traveller production

The Convertible ends in June 1969 and sedan production in November 1970; the Traveller follows in April 1971.310

  8. 1974

    New Zealand production ends

Production in New Zealand continues after the British shutdown, finally ending in 1974.311

How to spot one

Look for

  • A rounded, jelly-mold silhouette gives the body its soft outline.3
  • A flat strip down the hood's center records the prototype's widening.12
  • Later cars put high-set headlights on the fenders above a simple slatted grille.69
  • The Traveller's rear body is framed in exposed ash wood.9

Year by year

  1. 1949–1951

Headlights climbed from grille to fenders, first for US exports; all Minors had them in 1951, when one-piece bumpers also became universal.210

  2. October 1954

Horizontal grille bars and a single main instrument between open gloveboxes replace the earlier front and dashboard layout.10

  3. October 1956

Minor 1000 brings a curved one-piece windshield and hood-side badges; its saloons also gain a larger rear window.10

  4. October 1961

Flashing turn signals replace pop-out semaphore trafficators; the glovebox lid disappears.10

  5. October 1963

New combined side/indicator lamps arrive; wipers now sweep together, and Travellers gain an extra round amber rear signal.10

Don’t confuse it with

  • Austin A30

The A30 keeps prewar proportions; the Minor's wider, more modern body grew from a 4-inch widening.2

  • Morris Eight Series E

Look for the Eight's waterfall grille; a later Minor has the simpler horizontal slats.1014

  • Converted two-door saloon

Factory convertibles have spot-welded braces at the B-pillars and dashboard sides, no courtesy-light holes; later chassis numbers start MAT.515
