The story

Created to replace the 145/146 on 156 running gear, the 147's design involved Walter de Silva, Wolfgang Egger and Andreas Zapatinas. Its hood reliefs recalled the 6C 2500 Villa d'Este.234

    Turin debut on 156 running gear

    June's Turin Motor Show introduced the 145/146 replacement on 156 running gear; paddle-operated Selespeed was available at launch.2

    Car of the Year by a single point

    A 238-point score won the European award. May also brought the five-door, with rear handles tucked into the roof pillars.123

    GTA: 247 hp from a 3.2-liter V6

    The GTA added 15 mm of width per side around 225/45R17 tires, with six-speed manual or Selespeed transmission choices.2

  4. 2002

    Multijet expands the diesel range

    Late-year Multijet arrivals included the 99 hp 1.9 JTD 8V and the 138 hp 1.9 JTD 16V.23

  5. 2004

    Giugiaro redraws the 147

    Giugiaro's facelift changed the grille, lights and cabin; the GTA skipped it. The 16-valve 1.9 JTDM reached 148 hp for 2005.25

  6. 2007

    Q2 puts a Torsen diff up front

    The 1.9 JTD Q2 gained a front Torsen limited-slip differential, helping it put down diesel torque without spinning away power in corners.26

  7. 2007

    Ducati Corse: 168 hp diesel punch

    Shown at Bologna, the Ducati Corse paired a 168 hp 1.9 JTDM with Q2 and a Sport button that changed the accelerator map.27

  8. 2010

    Production ends; Giulietta takes over

    Five-door production stopped in May; the larger Giulietta followed in June. Total 147 production reached 651,823.23

Look for

  • Three- or five-door hatchback with a low nose; five-doors hide rear handles in the window frames.26
  • Tall Alfa shield grille flanked by headlights.45
  • Raised hood ribs echo the 6C 2500 Villa d’Este.4
  • Teardrop rear lamps wrap around the sides; their design took inspiration from the 1959 Chevrolet Impala.4

    The five-door joins the range, with rear handles concealed in the roof pillars.3

  2. 2004–2005 facelift

    A broader shield grille, wider and sharper headlights, and lower side intakes mark the facelift; the GTA keeps its early nose.35

    Rear-lamp inner sections reach farther into the hatch; a deeper rear bumper gains a raised central cutout along its bottom edge.35

  4. 2004–2005 facelift

    Regular models gain diagonal ribs on the door panels and a textured finish on the dash and door casings, as on the GTA.35

    A further update adds a chrome grille, revised headlights and a different front apron.3
