The story

The original Giulietta drove Alfa Romeo's move into series production. The 2010 hatch pursued comfort and Alfa character: Lorenzo Ramaciotti led group design, Marco Tencone headed Alfa design, and Centro Stile shaped the car.256

How to spot one

Look for

  • Type 940: a 5-door hatchback with a coupe-like roofline.510
  • 2010 hatchback: twin hood ridges flow into the shield grille.6
  • Type 116 sedan: wedge profile, upright cabin and a high trunk with an abrupt cut-off.78
  • Early original Spider: curved windshield and no separate front quarter windows.4

Year by year

  1. 1958–1959

Sprint Series II gains fine-mesh center and side grilles; both Sprint and Veloce now have wind-down glass and chrome hubcaps.4

  2. 1959–1961

Spider moves from 750 to 101 in 1959, adding rear reflectors and longer doors; Series III brings larger rear lamps in 1961.34

  3. 1959–1961

Berlina gains small tailfins and larger rear lamps in 1959; 1961 cars join square-mesh side grilles to the center shield.4

  4. 1981–1983

Type 116 gains plastic lower-body cladding in 1981; redesigned bumpers identify the late-1983 Series 3 update.8

  5. 2013–2014

Modern hatchback: revised front grille, chrome fog-light surrounds and new wheel designs.511

  6. 2016

Honeycomb grille and gloss-black bumper inserts arrive; sportier trims add red detailing, with updated badges and lettering.517

Don’t confuse it with

  • Giulia Spider

Look for the raised hood bulge with a fake chrome vent at its front edge, added to clear the larger engine.4

  • Giulia Sprint

Almost identical outside; look through the glass for the Giulia Sprint's different steering wheel and dashboard.4

  • Volkswagen Golf / GTI

The modern Giulietta has a rounded, curving body; the Golf and GTI use much straighter panel lines.10
