How to spot one

Look for

  • Original cars have a grilleless nose, narrow LED headlights and a smoothly curved front bumper.2
  • A high, fastback roof tapers toward a short rear overhang above a hatchback tailgate.2
  • Smooth body surfaces and mechanical flush door handles define the original side view.2
  • Juniper Premium cars have full-width light bars at both ends.2
  • Original rear ends pair integrated LED taillights with a liftgate lip spoiler and a black lower diffuser.2

Year by year

  1. 2021 model year

Matrix headlights and double-pane glass arrived; the update also brought a heated steering wheel.5

  2. May 2021 / October 2022

Fremont cars for North America lost radar; ultrasonic parking sensors later vanished in most markets as Tesla Vision took over.5

  3. 2023 (China initially)

Black Gemini wheel covers, revised interior trim and extra ambient lighting appeared first in China.5

  4. 2025 Juniper refresh

Full-width light bars join both ends; cabin updates add ambient lighting and a rear-seat screen.2

  5. 2026 base trim

Budget Standard became simply Model Y in June; it drops the connecting light bars and uses standard 18-inch wheels.10

Don’t confuse it with

  • Model 3

The Y has a taller, rounder body and a hatchback tailgate; the Model 3 is a sedan.13

  • Model X

The larger Model X has falcon-wing rear doors; the Y uses conventional doors.415
