The story

Created to replace the Renault 21, the Laguna ran through three generations from 1994 to 2015, as a hatchback, wagon and coupé. Laguna II broke the five-star Euro NCAP barrier; the later GT gained four-wheel steering.145

How to spot one

Look for

  • Laguna 1: the rear window has an unusual double curve.11
  • Early Laguna II: a conspicuous gray plastic section interrupts the grille.14
  • Early Laguna III: a gaping lower grille sits beneath closely spaced headlights.415
  • Laguna Coupé: a broad, open grille gives the nose a Vanquish-like appearance.10
  • Laguna Coupé: rear lights and muscular haunches recall the Aston Martin DB9.10

Year by year

  1. 1998

Laguna 1: clear headlights, round fog lights, simpler front bumper; rear lamps trade gray for orange; trim badge front-right, engine badge front-left.411

  2. 1999

Laguna 1 upper trims: 16-inch wheels, plus metallic-gray side moldings and bumper strips.11

  3. 2010

Laguna III Phase 2: a more aggressive front end replaced the earlier nose.4

  4. 2012

Coupé Collection 2012: standard LED daytime running lights and new alloy-wheel designs.9

Don’t confuse it with

  • Aston Martin DB9

Check the nose: the Laguna Coupé combines DB9-like rear lights and haunches with a broad, Vanquish-like grille.10

  • Renault Safrane

The Laguna 1 has a more flowing, simpler outline; its double-curved rear window is a useful clue.11
