The story

Designed for the fuel shortage after the 1956 Suez Crisis, the Mini gave people and luggage 80% of its floorpan. British Motor Corporation, British Leyland and Rover built it from 1959 to 2000.1

How to spot one

Look for

  • Tiny two-door body with small wheels pushed to the corners.114
  • Exposed welded seams trace the front and rear roof pillars on saloons.1
  • Later saloons have concealed door hinges and wind-up front windows.14
  • Factory Sports Pack: 13-inch Minilite-style wheels beneath extended wheelarches.6
  • Sports Pack cars also have four auxiliary front lights and a large-bore exhaust tip.6

Year by year

  1. 1967 (Mk II)

The rear window grows, rear lamps become rectangular and the grille design changes.12

  2. 1969 (Mk III)

Flush door hinges and wind-up front windows replace exposed hinges and sliding glass.14

  3. 1984 (City and Mayfair)

City and Mayfair gain 12-inch wheels; plastic wheelarch extensions define the Mk V update.1215

  4. 1993

    Mayfair gains a full-width burr-walnut dashboard.12

  5. 1996–1997 (Mk VII)

MPi cars gain an airbag steering wheel; a front-mounted radiator now sits behind the grille.7915

  6. 2000 (Sport 500)

Sport 500 gets a Platinum Silver roof and hood stripes, plus a high-level rear brake light.711

Don’t confuse it with

  • Mini Clubman / 1275 GT

Their longer, more conventional nose is the giveaway.16

  • Riley Elf / Wolseley Hornet

Upright grilles, tail fins and top-opening trunk lids identify these longer Mini-based luxury models.12

  • MINI Hatch (from 2001)

The later MINI is a hatchback; the classic car has a separate trunk lid hinged along its bottom edge.116
