The story

Built to replace the 406, the 2004–2011 407 grew into a sedan, wagon and coupe family. It paired double-wishbone front and multilink rear suspension; the 3.0 V6 diesel coupe added electronic damping.123

How to spot one

Look for

  • A pronounced front overhang gives the nose an unusually long reach.12
  • The windshield pillars lean back steeply.4
  • The Coupé has a wider, lower silhouette than the sedan.4
  • The SW has brushed-aluminum roof rails and rear glass that opens separately from the tailgate.7

Year by year

  1. Early 2005

A slimmer lower bumper lip replaces the deep early lip that scraped over speed bumps.5

  2. Mid-2006

Chrome strips appear above the side moldings; the highest trim also gains painted moldings.2

  3. July 2008

Sedan and SW grilles gain more chrome; the Coupé keeps its existing body design.2

  4. July 2008

Sedan and SW gain redesigned lights and a rear bumper incorporating a diffuser.2

  5. From 2010

The Coupé receives new mirrors despite retaining its original body styling.2

Don’t confuse it with

  • Peugeot 307

The rounded design language is similar, but the 307 is the smaller car.4
