The story

Conceived as the MB 100's replacement, the Vito includes a nine-seat Tourer. Its passenger sibling changed from V-Class to Viano for generation two; North American versions use Metris.123

    W638 debuts with a name from Vitoria

    The W638 debuts in 1995, taking its name from Vitoria-Gasteiz. Its 1996–2003 run uses a transverse front engine and front-wheel drive.124

  2. 1999

    Common-rail CDI replaces the old diesels

    The W638 swaps its old diesels for OM611 common-rail units. A mild facelift accompanies the mechanical change.5

  3. 2003

    W639 switches to rear-wheel drive

    The 2003–2014 W639 expands to three lengths and two roof heights. Passenger Vitos include Traveliner; V-Class becomes Viano.1236

  4. 2010

    W639 gets a new face and cabin upgrades

    The W639 receives redesigned bumpers and lights, upgraded cabin materials and fresh technology.3

  5. 2012

    Seven-seat electric E-Cell Crewbus

    The E-Cell Crewbus adds a seven-seat passenger option, with 32 kWh usable battery capacity and an 89 km/h speed limit.7

    W447 brings three drive layouts

    With the W447, front-, rear- and all-wheel drive coexist. Launch diesels split between 1.6 L front-drive and 2.15 L rear-/all-wheel-drive units. V-Class returns.138

    OM 654 and the 236 hp 124 CDI

    The 124 CDI Tourer brings 236 hp, 500 Nm and 0–100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. OM 654 diesels and 9G-TRONIC spread to all rear-drive Vitos.9

    90 kWh for the long-range eVito Tourer

    A 201 hp front motor and 90 kWh usable battery bring a claimed 421 km. Optional 110 kW DC charging takes 10–80% in under 45 minutes.9

    MBUX and a 10.25-inch center screen

    The Vito and eVito gain MBUX, new instruments and a 10.25-inch center screen, alongside a redesigned grille and front bumper.1011

How to spot one

Look for

  • W 638 Vitos have larger, unpainted mirrors than the passenger V-Class.4
  • Second-generation Vitos have a more laid-back windshield and A-pillars.3
  • On the 2026 Tourer, look for the V-Class body shape with clear glass.12
