The story

The 200 offered a way into Mercedes ownership. The W110 200 replaced the 190 with two liters and twin carburetors in 1965; the 1968 W115 joined the brand's first million-selling range.123

    November brings the revised Stuttgart 200; the W02 had started life as the 8/38 PS.34

  2. 1965

    W110 200 replaces the 190

    The W110 200 replaces the 190 with a 2.0-liter, 95 hp twin-Solex M121: double wishbones up front, a rear swing axle, front discs and rear drums.25

  3. 1968

    W115 200 joins the million-selling /8

    The W115 200 manual does 0–100 km/h in 15.2 s and reaches 160 km/h. The W114/W115 generation becomes the brand's first million seller.36

  4. 1976

    W123: stronger cell, safer steering

    The W123 200 launches with a stronger passenger cell and a safety steering column whose corrugated tube can buckle sideways in a crash.78

  5. 1980

    M102: more power, less fuel

    The W123 200 adopts the 2.0-liter M102, with 109 hp and 170 Nm. The new gasoline engines bring more power and about 10% lower fuel use.89

  6. 1984

    W124: Cd 0.29–0.30 and an 86% wiper

    The W124 range debuts at Cd 0.29–0.30. Its 200 uses a carbureted M102; an eccentric-sweep panoramic wiper clears 86% of the windshield.1011

  7. 1988

    200 E brings injection beyond Italy

    The injected W124 200 E reaches Germany in September with a catalyst and about 116 hp, after initially serving Italy.1

  8. 1992

    200 E gains the twin-cam M111

    The W124 200 E makes about 134 hp and 190 Nm with its new M111. A five-speed manual is standard.12

  9. 1993

    200 E becomes E 200

    June's W124 facelift adopts E-Class naming: 200 E becomes E 200, and the separate fuel-injection suffix disappears.101213

Look for

  • W110: rear fins, a short nose and round headlights.3
  • W115: squared-off sedan body, large grille and plenty of chrome.619
  • W123: broad ribbed taillights and horizontal front light units with turn signals at their outer ends.14
  • W124 sedans: a low, trapezoidal trunk lid between taillights with slanted inner edges.10
  • W124: a single windshield wiper reaches into the top corners of the glass.11
