The story

Ford created the Ranger to replace the Mazda-built Courier with its own compact pickup for 1983. In 2011, the Australian-developed T6 united the American and Mazda-derived Ranger lines into one global family.4

  1. 1983

F-Series trim becomes a compact pickup

Ranger had named an F-Series trim since 1965. For 1983, Ford's first in-house compact pickup replaced the Mazda-built Courier.4

  2. 1993

    Splash brings a Flareside bed

The midyear Splash paired a Flareside bed with body-color bumpers and grille, bright graphics and sport-tuned suspension on RWD trucks.5

  3. 1998

Wishbones and a 90-hp Ranger EV

US Rangers swapped Twin-I-Beams for wishbone suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. The new EV used a rear-mounted 90-hp motor.5

  4. 2011

    T6 unifies the global Ranger

Ford Australia's T6 replaced the American and Mazda-derived Rangers with one global range, while the North American Ranger was discontinued.4

  5. 2018

    Raptor puts FOX before firepower

The first Raptor used a 2.0 L bi-turbo diesel, 10-speed automatic and FOX shocks; its engine choice drew criticism.678

  6. 2019

North American comeback with 270 hp

The T6 reached North America for 2019 after the hiatus, using a 270-hp turbocharged 2.3 L four and 10-speed automatic.49

  7. 2022

Global T6 gets new body and chassis

Global production adopted a major body and chassis update; the P703 successor retained a revised T6 platform.610

  8. 2024

    315-hp V6 joins US redesign

    The US Ranger added a 2.7 L EcoBoost V6 option; the 405-hp Raptor paired its 3.0 L twin-turbo V6 with 2.5-inch FOX Live Valve shocks.211

  9. 2024

Baja 1000 Stock Mid-Size class win

A production-based Ranger Raptor race truck took the Stock Mid-Size class at the Baja 1000.3

How to spot one

Look for

  • First-generation Rangers echo F-Series styling: twin headlamps, chrome grille and FORD tailgate lettering.1
  • The 1993 redesign has a rounded nose, flush side glass and gentle fender flares.5
  • The P375 facelift swaps a rectangular three-bar grille for a rounded opening with one center bar.6
  • 2019 North American Rangers have a steel front bumper, fender grilles and RANGER embossed into the tailgate.6
  • 2024 Rangers wear C-clamp lights at both ends, bold wheel arches and RANGER stamped across the tailgate.11

Year by year

  1. 1989

Flush halogen headlamps, wraparound parking lights and a flush grille updated the earlier front-end treatment.5

  2. 1993 / 1995

1993 brought a rounded nose, flush side glass and small fender flares; 1995 changed the grille again.512

  3. 1998

A lower hoodline and larger rear window accompany a new grille, front bumper and lights.5

  4. 2015 (P375)

A slightly oval grille with one center bar replaced the rectangular three-bar grille; the cabin was redesigned too.6

  5. MY2019 (Australia)

PX MkIII revised the nose again; XLT and Wildtrak gained LED daytime running lights and HID headlamps.616

Don’t confuse it with

  • Mazda B-Series (North America)

The Ranger-derived B-Series arrived in 1994, but Mazda did not offer the Flareside bed.45

  • Volkswagen Amarok (2023)

The 2023 Amarok wears squarer wheel arches and slimmer C-shaped taillights than the related Ranger.20
