The story

Built to answer new European and Japanese rivals, the 348 replaced the 328 with a pressed-steel monocoque, a longitudinal V8 and a transverse gearbox. It was the last V8 Ferrari developed under Enzo.12

    The 348 arrives at September's Frankfurt show as the tb coupe and ts targa, replacing the 328.12

    Syclone wins the quarter-mile duel

    Car and Driver's 348ts runs 14.5 seconds to the GMC Syclone's 14.1, then overtakes the pickup just beyond the quarter-mile.4

    Challenge kit launches at Mugello

    Previewed in September for 1993 racing, the dealer-installed kit turns road 348s into one-make racers while keeping the engine and gearbox stock.5

    The limited run pairs 312 hp with a shorter final drive and wider rear track; 0–60 mph takes 5.3 seconds.16

    Spider ends a 20-year soft-top gap

    Unveiled on Rodeo Drive in February, the 348 Spider restores a series-production two-seat Ferrari soft-top for the first time since the Daytona Spider.78

    GTB and GTS gain the F119H V8

    The late-1993 GTB/GTS update brings 316 hp (312 hp for North America), 10.8:1 compression and revised suspension geometry.1

    December's GTB-based special celebrates Oscar Larrauri's Italian GT2 title; carbon-Kevlar doors and bumpers cut weight.9

    The Repsol-backed, Michelotto-prepared GT/C LM takes 11th overall and fourth in class: Ferrari's first Le Mans finish since 1982.10

    Spider production ends

    The Spider bows out in early 1995 after 1,090 built; the GTB and GTS had given way to the F355 GTB and GTS in spring 1994.7

    The US special exposes the rear lights and adds painted lower aprons plus a deeper front spoiler.12

    The full convertible adds a folding soft top, painted lower cladding and a body-colored engine cover.1716

    Engine covers and lower skirts turn body color; a chrome rear horse and nine-bar front grille replace the black horse and five-bar grille.1715
