How to spot one

Look for

  • Both eras share a fish-mouth nose, eye-like headlamps and flat-looking sides.13
  • Later classics and the modern car share raised hood bulges.414
  • Modern: a kink in each door echoes the classic Spider's flanks.4
  • Modern: a long, upright nose and extended overhangs distinguish it from the MX-5.4
  • Pininfarina-era classics have script side badges and mirrors mounted in the fixed vent windows.1

Year by year

  1. 1970 (US model year)

A honeycomb grille and larger taillights with built-in reverse lights distinguish the B series.1

  2. July 1970

The BS1 brought paired hood humps and bumper overriders.2

  3. 1975 (US)

US cars gained large impact bumpers with front turn signals built into them.1

  4. 1979

Bigger hood bulges, new taillights, flush side markers, a rear '2000' badge and a front spoiler mark the Spider 2000.1

  5. 1983 model year

Pininfarina script replaced the side 'f' emblems; two mirrors moved into the fixed vent windows.1

Don’t confuse it with

  • Mazda MX-5 (ND)

The modern Fiat has a longer, more upright nose, extended overhangs, hood bulges and a kink in the door line.45
